Justin Hartley stars in the popular CBS crime series, ‘The Tracker’. He plays Colter Shaw, a skilled survivalist who travels the country in an Airstream, finding missing people and collecting rewards for his work.
Going into its third season, Tracker kept challenging what a typical crime show could be. The mid-season premiere, which everyone was looking forward to – featuring Colter on the run from the police – aired on Sunday, but the story felt hurried and resolved too quickly in just one episode.
Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw Becomes a Fugitive in Tracker’s Latest Episode
The show Tracker isn’t a typical crime drama because both the story and the characters change significantly over time. Justin Hartley portrays Colter Shaw as a man shaped by his past, so the Colter viewers see in the first season is different from the one they meet in season three. The season culminates in a surprising revelation about his father’s death. Discovering his mother’s connection to the man who killed his father completely alters Colter’s understanding of everything.
As a big fan of Tracker, I was really hooked by how this season kicked off. Colter totally shut everyone out, obsessing over his dad’s old files – it was a compelling way to get things moving. What I found particularly interesting was how the show handled losing two key characters; they didn’t feel bound by typical TV formulas, and it really worked. It was a first for the series, and a fantastic episode! You could really feel the weight of what Colter discovered carrying through the rest of the season, and Reenie is clearly still struggling with everything that happened last season, which adds a lot of emotional depth.
Justin Hartley and the show’s creator, Elwood Reid, envisioned a scenario where Colter would need to rely on all his training and abilities to stay hidden from the authorities. However, fitting Hartley’s idea for a dramatic shift in Colter’s life into just one episode meant the show couldn’t fully showcase those skills to viewers.
The scene began with Colter pulling himself from a wrecked car to call for help after a crash. He briefly fell asleep beside the vehicle, but when he awoke, he discovered he was somehow connected to a dangerous assassin named Emile Lang and wrongly accused of assisting him in a string of murders.
The FBI searched Reenie’s office, putting Colter in a tough spot as he was being sought as a murder suspect. However, just 42 minutes later, the situation was resolved, and Colter was cleared of any wrongdoing. The next episode will probably see things return to normal.
Tracker Fumbled Justin Hartley’s Exciting Storyline By Rushing It
A key part of the story involves Colter using his survival skills to evade the police while uncovering the truth behind a murder he didn’t commit and figuring out who set him up. Adding to the challenge, he also has to find secret ways to contact his team for assistance.
After a strange message, a secret phone, and a new computer, Randy was back in touch with Colter, doing the hacking and information gathering Colter requested. If the story about the fugitive had been stretched out over two episodes instead of being quickly resolved, the show Tracker could have revealed a more complex side to its main character.
He needed assistance with the investigation because he couldn’t openly question Lang’s colleagues at their workplace. Colter had specifically asked not to be contacted, as he was unavailable during filming. That left Billie Matalon, another bounty hunter, as the next logical choice. Their relationship had deepened since her last appearance in season two, evolving into a romantic connection after a risky assignment.
Whenever Colter and Billie were together, you could feel the awkwardness between them. But they didn’t have much time to dwell on it, because Colter was constantly being recognized, and the police would always show up soon after wherever they went. It wasn’t a great look for him to be spotted so frequently.
Billie’s fast thinking and bravery were key to resolving the case, making it a strong episode for her character. However, considering how much was at stake, the resolution felt a little too neat and tidy. The police conspiracy was revealed, Colter was exonerated, the villain was defeated, and Keaton survived – everything was resolved quickly. Considering how well Tracker usually handles complex storylines, it’s disappointing that this promising plotline felt somewhat rushed and underwhelming.
