Tracker EP Reveals How Bobby And Velma Are Being Written Out, And Whether They Could Return To The Show

I’m really looking forward to when Tracker comes back for Season 3 in 2025, but I was disappointed to hear we’ll be losing two of the main cast members. It was already announced that Eric Graise and Abby McEnany won’t be returning as Bobby, the hacker, and Velma, Colter’s handler. That basically means Justin Hartley’s Colter Shaw will be mostly on his own this season. Now, one of the show’s producers is explaining how they’re writing those characters out of the story, and hinting at whether they might come back sometime in the future.

Currently, the main cast of Tracker consists of only Hartley and Fiona Renee, making the departures of Graise and McEnany unexpected. It was particularly surprising because the second season didn’t hint that either character intended to leave the show permanently. Before the Season 3 premiere, Elwood Reid – who is also the showrunner – explained to TV Insider that Velma and Bobby will be taking on new roles, though things won’t necessarily be easy for them:

Currently, Velma is leaving to spend time with Teddi, and we’ve already established in the first episode that they were facing some difficulties. Meanwhile, Bobby has accepted a new and intriguing job, details of which will be revealed in the first episode.

It’s understandable that Velma is departing to be with Teddi, who is her wife. Considering that Teddi’s actress, Robin Weigert, left after season one, it makes sense to bring the couple together now that McEnany is also leaving. However, what really piques my interest are the “problems” that Reid hinted at. It will be interesting to see how those develop.

Regarding Bobby, given his abilities, it’s understandable he might pursue other work. With everyone now in these new roles, is it possible we’ll see Velma and Bobby back at some point? Elwood Reid hasn’t ruled out their return, but he did want to clarify something else:

There’s a possibility, but right now, in this first block, no.

It’s understandable that there aren’t any current plans to bring Bobby and Velma back. If they left and then returned so quickly, it would feel strange, undermining the impact of their departures. However, I’m happy the writers aren’t ruling out the possibility of them reappearing, and if Tracker continues for many seasons, I hope they do. Until then, I’d enjoy seeing Colter and Reenie occasionally share updates on what Bobby and Velma are up to. We might also get those details through Bobby’s cousin, Randy (Chris Lee), if he remains as Colter’s dedicated hacker.

Although Abby McEnany and Eric Graise don’t appear to be coming back in the near future, another cast member is returning. Jensen Ackles will reprise his role as Russell Shaw, Colter’s brother, after it was revealed that their mother arranged for their father’s murder. The issues within the Shaw family will continue to escalate this season. As Colter and Russell rebuild their relationship after years of separation, this new information could either drive a wedge between them or bring them even closer. More details will be revealed soon.

It’s clear that Tracker will have a slightly different feel when the third season begins, as some of the original cast members won’t be returning. However, I’m still looking forward to seeing what happens! The new season starts on Sunday, October 19th at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, and you can watch episodes the following day with a Paramount+ subscription. Alternatively, fans can also view episodes through a YouTube TV subscription.
