Though it’s been in the works for a while, Top Gun 3 is moving closer to becoming a reality. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer recently shared positive news about the script’s development.
Following the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick – it earned almost $1.5 billion and was even nominated for an Oscar – a third Top Gun movie is now in the works. Christopher McQuarrie and Ehren Kruger, who worked on the previous film, are returning to write the script.
In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, producer Jerry Bruckheimer discussed the possibility of both Top Gun 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean 6. He shared that the script for one of the projects is expected to be completed soon. Here’s what he had to say:
It’s a very close competition between the two films, and we’ll have to wait and see who wins. Currently, Top Gun is slightly in the lead, but the difference is minimal. We anticipate receiving the script soon.
In the same interview, Bruckheimer also touched on speculation about the plot of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, specifically rumors that the story would focus on Jack Sparrow’s son. He confirmed that there’s some truth to that idea, but didn’t offer any further details, simply stating, “They’re close on part of it. That’s all I’ll tell ya.”
A third Top Gun movie is in the works and will likely star Tom Cruise as Maverick, Miles Teller as Rooster, and Glen Powell as Hangman. While these actors are expected to return, it’s still unclear if other members of the original cast will be involved. Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct, but that hasn’t been officially announced.
In an interview, director Kosinski hinted at the plot of Top Gun 3, explaining that it will center around Maverick going through a deep personal struggle—an “existential crisis.” He also strongly suggested that this movie will be the last time we see the character.
I’m incredibly excited about where we’re going with this. It’s not just about making another big movie; it’s about the story itself, and it’s truly epic in scope. Maverick is facing a real crisis, something far bigger than anything he’s dealt with before – it’s an existential struggle that puts his entire world into perspective. It’s hard to explain without spoiling anything, but it’s a question that really makes you think, and honestly, it makes the movie feel small in comparison to the themes we’re exploring. It’s going to be huge!
We’re developing another installment of the story – one final adventure, if you will. Ehren Kruger, the writer of Fast & Furious, is currently working on the script. As with any project, it’s taking time to get everything right, and we’ll only move forward if we’re confident we have a compelling story to tell.
Following the huge success of Top Gun: Maverick, the team behind it – director Joseph Kosinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and screenwriter Ehren Kruger – came together again for F1: The Movie. Released in 2025, the film was another commercial hit and even earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Given the current timeline, Top Gun 3 likely won’t be released until 2028 at the earliest.
