It’s tough to create a truly successful fantasy TV show, but a few have really resonated with both critics and viewers. A great way to gauge how well a show is received is through Rotten Tomatoes, a website that collects reviews and gives each show a score from 1 to 100%.
Understanding how Rotten Tomatoes scores work is key. The site gives movies and TV shows two scores: the Tomatometer, which reflects the opinions of professional critics, and the Popcornmeter, which shows what regular viewers think. A score of 90% on either meter means that 90% of the reviews were positive, while 10% were negative.
Getting a 90% rating is difficult for any TV show, particularly in the fantasy genre. Even highly acclaimed series like Game of Thrones didn’t reach that mark. But a few shows have not only exceeded 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, they’ve earned the perfect score of 100%.
Supernatural (2005 – 2020)
Created by Eric Kripke, the fantasy horror show Supernatural featured Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Katie Cassidy, Lauren Cohan, and a large ensemble cast. Running for an incredible 15 seasons with 327 episodes, the show earned a strong 93% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

Supernatural TV shows often develop a distinct, and sometimes over-the-top, style that appeals to a dedicated fanbase. While these shows don’t usually receive high ratings, Supernatural is an exception. Despite an overall audience score of 73%, it’s important to consider what critics thought of the show as well.
The Boys (2019 – Present)
Created by Eric Kripke, who also made Supernatural, The Boys is a darkly comedic take on the superhero genre. The show features a talented cast including Karl Urban, Jack Quaid, Antony Starr, and Erin Moriarty. Since it’s still running, its Rotten Tomatoes (RT) score is subject to change, but currently, critics give it a 93% rating.

Okay, so “The Boys” is one of those shows that critics really loved, but regular viewers were a little more lukewarm – it’s sitting at 75% on the Popcornmeter. Still, that’s good enough for a “Certified Fresh” rating, which is awesome! It’s another big success for Eric Kripke, the creator, and I can definitely see why it’s getting so much buzz.
Gen V (2023 – Present)
Most TV spinoffs aren’t as successful as the original shows, but Gen V is proving to be different. This ongoing superhero comedy actually has better reviews on Rotten Tomatoes than The Boys itself. Eric Kripke, who also worked on The Boys, leads the project, alongside co-creators Craig Rosenberg and Evan Goldberg.

Currently, critics give Gen V a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Similar to its predecessor, The Boys, regular viewers haven’t been quite as enthusiastic, giving it a 74% audience score. However, this doesn’t detract from Gen V‘s impressive overall score of over 90%.
Percy Jackson & The Olympians (2023 – Present)

Disney has successfully rebooted Percy Jackson and the Olympians following the disappointing movie adaptations from 20th Century Fox. The new TV series, based on Rick Riordan’s popular books, is a surprising success, and notably created with the author’s direct involvement alongside Jonathan E. Steinberg.

Attack On Titan (2013 – 2023)

The Returned (2012 – 2015)
Originally known as Les Revenants, The Returned is a French TV show with supernatural elements created by Fabrice Gobert. It’s based on the novel They Came Back by Robin Campillo, and an American version was made in 2015. However, many viewers felt the remake didn’t live up to the quality of the original French series.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End (2023 – Present)
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is an anime series adapted from a manga by Kanehito Yamada. The first season, consisting of 28 episodes, aired in 2023, and a second season has been announced. The new episodes are scheduled to come out in January 2026.
