With so many streaming services available, it’s easier than ever to find scary movies – you can watch everything from timeless favorites to newer films you might have missed.

As a horror fan, I’m always looking for good scary movies to stream, and Amazon Prime Video has a surprisingly solid selection! I’ve rounded up the best ones you can watch right now with your regular Prime subscription – you don’t need to pay extra for any add-ons, which is awesome.

It Follows (2014)

People still argue about whether the movie It Follows is a hidden metaphor for sexually transmitted diseases (but it isn’t), but everyone agrees it’s genuinely scary. It introduces a truly original monster – one that can appear in many different forms – and establishes Maika Monroe as a fantastic new horror movie lead.

This horror story follows Jay as she’s pursued by a terrifying killer that spreads through sexual contact. After unknowingly contracting it from a recent encounter, she races against time to escape the demonic entity. It’s a chilling and disturbing tale, and audiences will be captivated by the unique, vintage-inspired e-reader carried by the main character, Yara.

Terrifier (2016) & Terrifier 2 (2022)

Now that Terrifier 3 is out, it’s a good time to look back at how Art the Clown first appeared on screen. Terrifier was Damien Leone’s first full-length movie featuring David Howard Thornton as the terrifying clown, and it was made with very little money but a lot of dark, gritty energy.

The sequel really solidified Art’s place as one of the most darkly funny and cruel horror villains ever created. That bedroom scene is easily the most disturbing thing you’ll see this Halloween, and a great preview of what’s to come in the next movie.

Barbarian (2022)

Barbarian starts with Tess arriving at her Airbnb rental the night before a big job interview, only to discover someone else has already booked the same house. While the other guest, Keith, seems okay with sharing the space, things quickly take a terrifying and violent turn.

It’s safe to say this movie is full of surprises. What begins as a tightly wound thriller quickly descends into a shocking and terrifying experience, complete with impressively gruesome special effects and scenes that go beyond typical boundaries.

Drag Me To Hell (2009)

The movie centers on Christine, a loan officer who refuses to extend a mortgage for an older woman. As a result, she’s struck by a frightening curse. Christine then experiences terrifying visions and is attacked by demons, forcing her to desperately find a way to break the curse before it’s too late and she’s pulled into the underworld.

Love it or hate it, Sam Raimi’s horror film Drag Me to Hell is genuinely entertaining, even with its over-the-top moments. If you’re familiar with his Evil Dead movies and approach it as a silly, exaggerated experience, you’ll likely have a good time.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)

“Stay on the roads and avoid the moors,” – that simple piece of advice highlights the importance of listening to locals when you travel. Backpackers David and Jack ignore this warning in this thrilling story, and quickly regret it as they explore the English countryside under a full moon.

American Werewolf in London is a standout werewolf film, brilliantly blending scares and humor. Its incredibly realistic practical effects are so good, they almost make you long for the days before computer-generated imagery.

Doctor Sleep (2019)

Doctor Sleep picks up the story of Danny Torrance, now grown up and battling the demons of his childhood trauma and addiction. He comes across a dangerous group that preys on children who possess special abilities, forcing him to confront his past and fight for their survival.

Many film fans place Stanley Kubrick’s version of The Shining among the greatest horror movies of all time, recognizing Kubrick as a filmmaking master. So, when a sequel was announced, people worldwide were worried it wouldn’t be as good as the original.

Mike Flanagan consistently delivers excellent work, and he was the ideal director for this project. He skillfully blended Stephen King’s original story with Stanley Kubrick’s cinematic interpretation, while also adding his own unique creative touch.

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre: 50th Anniversary Edition (1974)

Tobe Hooper’s 1974 film, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, is still considered one of the most important and frightening horror movies ever made. As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, the film is being rediscovered for its raw, realistic style and constant sense of dread.

This horror film centers on a group of friends terrorized by Leatherface, a chainsaw-wielding killer, and his family of cannibals. Known for its intense, stripped-down style, the movie expertly builds suspense and redefined the horror genre with its shocking violence and deeply unsettling atmosphere, which continues to disturb audiences even today.

he Crazies (2010)

Fast-moving zombies have been a horror staple since films like 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead, but 2010’s The Crazies still manages to deliver a terrifying and original take on the genre. The story unfolds in the quiet town of Ogden Marsh, where a contaminated water supply slowly turns the inhabitants into aggressive, violent versions of themselves.

This scary and suspenseful movie follows Sheriff Caleb (Timothy Olyphant) as he desperately tries to save his loved ones from a terrifying outbreak and the soldiers who lock down the town. Looking for a fun, spooky movie to watch this Friday? This is it!

Totally Killer (2023)

Seventeen-year-old Jamie has a terrifying encounter with a masked attacker, which unexpectedly sends her back in time to 1987. Now stuck in the past, she has to adjust to a totally different world and joins forces with her own teenage mother to stop the attacker for good.

Totally Killer isn’t likely to become a hugely popular or iconic movie like the ones that came before it, but it’s still a fun watch. It has a great soundtrack, some really funny scenes, and a good amount of gore.

Suspiria (2018)

Luca Guadagnino’s film is a unique and unsettling horror movie inspired by Dario Argento’s 1977 classic, offering a visually striking and dreamlike take on the world of witchcraft.

Susie’s move to Berlin to dance with the Markos Tanz Company marks the start of a dramatic turn in her life. A mysterious and sinister power begins to threaten everyone involved, attempting to control their destinies. Plus, the incredibly versatile Tilda Swinton takes on multiple roles in the film.
