Tommy Dorfman will star in New York Theatre Workshop’s upcoming production of “Becoming Eve.”
The upcoming show is penned by Emil Weinstein (known for “A League of Their Own”) and inspired by the memoir of Abby Chava Stein (“Sources of Pride”). This production will be helmed by Tyne Rafaeli (“Spain”). The performance titled “Becoming Eve” is scheduled to debut at Abrons Arts Center on March 19, 2025. The opening night is slated for April 7. It will run for a limited period until April 27, 2025.
Emily Dorfman gained popularity for her role in Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why.” Lately, she has graced the stage on Broadway in Sam Gold’s revival of “Romeo & Juliet,” sharing the spotlight with Rachel Zegler and Kit Connor. Dorfman first took the New York theater scene by storm through The New Group’s production of Jeremy O. Harris’ play titled “Daddy.”

As I sit here, immersed in the world of theatre, I’m eagerly anticipating the upcoming productions by New York Theatre Workshop. First on my radar is “A Knock on the Roof,” a captivating new play penned and performed by the talented Khawla Ibraheem, running until February 16, 2025. The season will draw to a close in Spring 2025 with “Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole,” a masterpiece written by the multi-talented Colman Domingo and our esteemed artistic director Patricia McGregor. The season kicked off with “We Live in Cairo,” a mesmerizing creation featuring the brilliant minds of The Lazours and the visionary direction of Obie Award winner Taibi Magar. I can’t wait to experience these stories unfold on stage!
In essence, the story ‘Becoming Eve’ takes place a week before the High Holidays, where three rabbis engage in a heated debate to save a family by bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary Jewish beliefs. One of these rabbis is Chava (Dorfman), who is from a prominent Hasidic rabbinical family and was expected to lead the next generation until her personal truth as a transgender woman collided dramatically with the rigid gender-based society she grew up in. As we delve into her past and grapple with religious questions, hidden facts and secrets come to light that will forever alter how we view ancient narratives.
As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that this upcoming show is a visual treat, meticulously crafted by some of the best talents in the industry. Amanda Villalobos brings her puppetry magic to the table, while Arnulfo Maldonado takes care of the scenic design. Enver Chakartash handles the costume design, and Ben Stanton manages the lighting. The sound design is a collaborative effort by UptownWorks – Daniela Hart, Noel Nichols, and Bailey Trieweiler. Lastly, the music is composed by Daniel Kluger. Claire Yenson will be casting the actors for this production, and Jason Kaiser will serve as our stage manager. It’s going to be an unforgettable experience!
