The Tomb Raider series is a hugely popular and enduring part of gaming history, and we got a first look at the next adventure for Lara Croft at The Game Awards on December 11th.
It’s exciting news for fans: not one, but two Tomb Raider games are currently in development! A brand new installment, Tomb Raider: Catalyst, is planned for release in 2027, and a complete remake of the original game, Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, will be available next year.
In the new Tomb Raider game, Catalyst, Lara Croft travels to Northern India to investigate an ancient disaster. This event has attracted many treasure hunters, and Lara needs to determine who she can trust. The game is being developed by Crystal Dynamics and will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
A remake of the original 1996 Tomb Raider is in development, titled Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. Crystal Dynamics is collaborating with Flying Wild Hog to rebuild the game using the same Unreal Engine 5 technology as Tomb Raider: Catalyst. The new version is planned for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Alix Wilton Regan will play Lara in both games. She’s also known for her voice work in popular titles like Cyberpunk 2077 and Mass Effect 3.
So, the last main Tomb Raider game, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, came out in 2018, but honestly, as a long-time fan, I knew Lara Croft would be back. And it’s happening! We’re getting a new game, and a TV show on Prime Video with Sophie Turner as Lara. It’s cool to think about, because Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander have both played her in movies before, so Sophie’s got some big boots to fill!
