The World War II naval film Greyhound, starring Tom Hanks, is gaining popularity on Apple TV+ after a slow start in theaters. While it didn’t initially find a large audience, it’s now become a surprising success on the streaming platform.
The movie Greyhound is doing well globally on Apple TV, according to FlixPatrol. It’s currently the ninth most-watched film on the platform worldwide, beating out Ghosted, the action comedy starring Chris Evans.
Originally planned for a June 2020 theatrical release with Sony Pictures, the war film ended up premiering on Apple TV. This change happened because of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led Sony to cancel the movie’s theatrical run and instead sell the distribution rights to Apple TV.
As a huge film fan, I remember when Greyhound quietly dropped on streaming back in July 2020. It didn’t get a lot of buzz because it skipped cinemas, but critics actually really liked it! It even managed to snag an Oscar nomination for Best Sound, which was fantastic to see.
The war movie has a score of 7.0 out of 10 on IMDb. Both critics and general audiences largely enjoyed it, as reflected by its 78% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating and 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While some critics felt the characters in Greyhound weren’t as developed as the exciting action, the film is a fast-paced and effective World War II thriller. It realistically portrays naval combat and emphasizes the crucial roles of logistics and staying calm under pressure.
Many viewers appreciated how the film tackled a difficult topic, with one person saying it accurately portrayed the experiences of sailors and merchant mariners who were vital to the war’s success.
What Is Greyhound About?
The movie Greyhound, based on C.S. Forester’s 1955 novel The Good Shepherd, stars Tom Hanks as U.S. Navy Commander Ernest Krause. He’s tasked with leading a group of Allied ships across the Atlantic Ocean during World War II.
Despite traveling with a convoy, Krause’s ship is chased by German submarines. This is Krause’s first mission during the war, and he quickly becomes part of the Battle of the Atlantic – a massive, complex naval conflict that would become the longest and largest of its kind in history.
Aaron Schneider, known for his work on ‘Get Low’, directed the film. Tom Hanks not only starred as the lead but also co-wrote the screenplay. The cast included Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, Elisabeth Shue, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Tom Brittney, and Devin Druid. Filming occurred in March 2018 on the USS Kidd, a ship docked in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the actors received training directly on the set.
