Three years after its initial release, the film A Man Called Otto is now a hit with streaming audiences. Released in December 2022, it’s a remake of the 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, which was nominated for an Academy Award. Both films, and the original novel by Fredrik Backman they’re based on, tell the story of a grumpy, widowed man who unexpectedly forms friendships with the people who move in next door.
The film A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks as Otto, with his son Truman Hanks playing a younger version of the character. The cast also includes Mariana Treviño, Rachel Keller, Mike Birbiglia, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, known for his role in The Lincoln Lawyer. While it didn’t receive any Academy Award nominations, the movie was a financial success, earning $113 million globally – more than films like Halloween Ends and Moonfall released in 2022.
According to FlixPatrol, the movie A Man Called Otto is becoming increasingly popular on Netflix around the world. Even though it’s not currently available to stream in the US, it’s currently ranked at number 7 on FlixPatrol’s global chart for Netflix.
Although newer Netflix releases like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Champagne Problems, and A Merry Little Ex-Mas are currently more popular, A Man Called Otto has performed better than Netflix’s all-time most-watched movie, KPop Demon Hunters, during the latter’s 13th week of release.
According to FlixPatrol, the 2022 film A Man Called Otto is currently the most popular movie in 12 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, El Salvador, and Uruguay.
You know, it doesn’t surprise me at all that the Tom Hanks film is still resonating with people globally, even after all this time. Critics were kind of split on it – it got around a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes – but regular moviegoers absolutely loved it. There was a real disconnect there, and I think audiences just connected with it on a deeper level than the critics did.
Over 5,000 people who actually bought tickets have reviewed A Man Called Otto on Rotten Tomatoes, giving it a fantastic score of 97% on the Popcornmeter. Most viewers really enjoyed the movie’s touching story and Tom Hanks’ acting, and those elements continue to resonate with audiences.
The continued popularity of A Man Called Otto is surprising, considering it’s mostly available on Netflix in South America. Usually, Netflix originals are accessible in all countries where Netflix operates, but this film is still performing well globally despite the limited access.
