Tom Cruise is a hugely popular action movie star, so it’s no surprise his films do well on streaming services. Currently, one of his movies is performing exceptionally well, even outperforming his other recent action blockbuster and becoming its biggest competitor.
According to Flix Patrol, Top Gun: Maverick is now the fourth most popular movie on Paramount+ in the United States. While it’s still behind other films like another Tom Cruise movie and Step Brothers, it’s gaining traction on the streaming platform.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, Top Gun: Maverick is the sequel fans waited decades for, following up on the original Top Gun from 1986. The film features , who returns to train a new group of Top Gun pilots for a dangerous mission with serious implications.
In addition to Tom Cruise, Top Gun: Maverick features Miles Teller as Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, Jennifer Connelly as Penelope “Penny” Benjamin, and Ed Harris as Rear Admiral Chester “Hammer” Cain. The film also surprised and delighted fans by bringing back Val Kilmer, in a touching return to his iconic role as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
When it came out, Top Gun: Maverick was a huge success, earning over $1.496 billion worldwide on a budget of just $177 million. Critics loved it too, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it a “Certified Fresh” rating of 96% based on almost 500 reviews.
Another Tom Cruise Action Film Is About to Become Top Gun: Maverick’s Biggest Streaming Competition
Although Top Gun: Maverick is currently popular on Paramount+, another exciting action movie starring Tom Cruise will be added to the streaming service soon, hoping to become the most-watched title. Fans can start watching it on December 4th.
Christopher McQuarrie directed Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which he co-wrote with Erik Jendresen. The film came out in May and received mostly good reviews. Though it didn’t make as much money as Top Gun: Maverick – earning less than $600 million with a $400 million budget – it still received a high rating from Rotten Tomatoes, earning an 80% “Certified Fresh” score.
Even though Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning could be Tom Cruise’s last film as Ethan Hunt, he isn’t ruling out future action movies. A new project was reportedly being developed in September, potentially allowing him to return to the franchise if he chooses.
Bruckheimer mentioned they have many successful movie ideas in development and are hoping to bring them all to life. He explained that his primary goal isn’t financial gain, but rather to entertain audiences and create a positive emotional impact – to make people smile and feel something.
You can now watch Top Gun: Maverick on Paramount+. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will be added to Paramount+ on December 4th.
