‘Together’: Rowdy Sundance Premiere Leaves Audience Screaming, Laughing at Wild Body Horror Freakout

At its premiere on Sunday night in Park City, the grisly romance film titled “Together,” starring real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, left audiences spellbound. The Sundance Midnight pick elicited continuous laughter, cheers, and exclamations of “Oh my!” from the full house as they reacted to the gory and shocking sequences.

The movie centers around a duo, portrayed by Franco and Larson, as they depart the urban jungle to settle in the countryside due to her professional aspiration. After an unexpected brush with something eerie within the forest, they begin enduring a string of unsettling and disturbing incidents that I won’t spoil for you.

Clearly, this movie is set to be a crowd-pleaser. The actors skillfully blend chilling scenes with comedic moments, creating depth for their characters, which is not always present in horror films.

Or, more casually:

This film’s got a good mix of scary and funny, plus it develops its characters better than most horror movies. It’ll probably go down well with the audience!

After catching a fascinating movie, I found myself engaged in a lively post-screening discussion with the talented filmmaker, Michael Shanks. He emphasized the significance of intermittently alleviating dramatic tension with well-timed humor in his movies.

Initially, he hadn’t planned to create a horror-comedy; instead, he began writing with no specific genre in mind. However, he often finds that real-life situations can be incredibly absurd, and when he watches horror or sci-fi movies without any levity, they don’t resonate with his personal experiences. He has laughed during funerals, and even in the darkest moments of life, humor and absurdity are present. Therefore, a serious tone throughout the piece wouldn’t feel authentic to him. Moreover, he believes that injecting some fun makes the story more enjoyable.

“Together” is a Sundance sales title, through WME.
