The recent cancellation of the game Postal: Bullet Paradise, due to concerns about its use of AI-generated content, highlighted the ongoing debate around artificial intelligence in game development. Now, Todd Howard from Bethesda has shared his perspective while discussing the upcoming Fallout Season 2, stating that his company does utilize AI, but strictly as a support tool for their artists, not as a replacement for them.
Howard sees AI as simply a tool to help artists work more efficiently. He emphasized that the core creative vision still comes from human artists, and AI could potentially speed up the process of exploring different ideas and versions of their work, according to Eurogamer.
Howard clarified that Bethesda isn’t employing AI to make game content. He explained they see AI as being similar to another tool like Photoshop – something that assists artists, rather than replacing them.
Howard explained that they’re constantly improving the tools they use to create and test their worlds. He compared it to Photoshop – you wouldn’t want to go back to an older version because of all the improvements. Their main goal is to preserve the artistic quality and the human element that makes their work unique.
Electronic Arts has encouraged its developers to use AI as collaborators, and Sega plans to integrate AI tools selectively when they’re useful. Owen Mahoney, former CEO of Nexon, believes AI will fundamentally change how games are made. However, Dan Houser, previously a key figure at Grand Theft Auto, has a much more negative view, comparing AI’s spread to a dangerous and uncontrollable disease.
