Sucker Punch Productions’ newest game is receiving incredible feedback from players. Currently, Ghost of Yotei boasts a remarkable 4.87-star average rating on the PlayStation Store, based on over 16,000 reviews. An impressive 95% of those who rated the game gave it a perfect score. The story of Atsu resonated deeply with players, even inspiring one fan to climb Mount Yotei – the very mountain that inspired the character – a challenging journey that took four days to complete.

The incredibly committed player known as “Chemical” Yoshino was actually a Famitsu editor from Japan. He wanted to understand the deep connection Atsu has with Ezo, now known as Hokkaido, as depicted in the game. To do this, he traveled to the mountain featured prominently in the Sucker Punch Productions game in mid-September.
Mount Yotei is a currently inactive volcano that reaches 1,898 meters in height. While not as tall as Mount Fuji, which is Japan’s highest peak at 3,776 meters, climbing Yotei is still a demanding hike. Yoshino recently spent four days and three nights tackling the climb, carrying a 10-kilogram backpack throughout the journey. He faced tough conditions, including thick forests, volcanic craters, and even the possibility of encountering Ussuri brown bears.

Despite having help from a guide and his own skills, the editor found climbing the mountain very difficult. However, Yoshino says he was rewarded with an amazing view and, like Atsu, felt a special connection to Mount Yotei. You can find short videos of his climb on YouTube.
Ghost of Yotei is the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, set 300 years later. It came out on PlayStation 5 on October 2nd of this year.
