That’s why many viewers are disappointed with his role in The Mandalorian. While introduced as the intriguing gunslinger Cobb Vanth, the show doesn’t seem to be utilizing Olyphant’s considerable talent effectively, making his appearance feel like a missed opportunity.

Cobb Vanth first appeared in the Star Wars novels of the Aftermath trilogy and later made his on-screen debut in Season 2 of The Mandalorian, specifically the first episode, “Chapter 9: The Marshal.” Though initially thought to be a traditional Mandalorian, Vanth quickly became a fan favorite, leading to his return in The Book of Boba Fett. However, the character hasn’t been seen at all in Star Wars television since then, which feels like a missed opportunity considering Timothy Olyphant’s strong acting abilities.

Who is Cobb Vanth in the Star Wars Universe?

Cobb Vanth first appeared in the Star Wars universe in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy, but he became much more popular after appearing in The Mandalorian. His unique personality really made his character stand out. Vanth originally lived in Mos Pelgo, but he had to leave when a mining guild took control. He traveled the desert until Jawas found him. He traded with them to get Boba Fett’s armor, then returned to Mos Pelgo to reclaim his town. After driving out the mining guild and becoming the town marshal, his path crossed with Din Djarin’s.

Din Djarin was searching for other Mandalorians to assist him in finding the Jedi for Grogu. He traveled to Mos Pelgo after hearing about a Mandalorian there, where he had a standoff with Cobb Vanth. They eventually worked together, defeating a dangerous creature and forming a strong bond. Vanth willingly gave Din his Mandalorian armor, continuing to protect the people of the town, now called Freetown. This storyline offers a deeper look into the life of a popular and skilled bounty hunter.

As Boba Fett faces opposition and prepares for a street war in Mos Espa, Din Djarin (Mando) travels to Freetown seeking assistance from Vanth. However, Vanth is already dealing with trouble from the Pykes, who are using his territory to transport goods. Despite this, the people of Freetown rally to help Mando when he asks. Sadly, before Vanth can offer aid, he is killed by Cad Bane in Freetown. Though a brief scene after the credits suggests Vanth might survive, he hasn’t appeared in the Star Wars universe since.

Star Wars Needs to Bring Back Timothy Olyphant

As a big Star Wars fan, I’m honestly frustrated with what’s been happening lately – they seem to be dropping characters they’ve already set up! Timothy Olyphant’s Cobb Vanth is a perfect example. They showed him recovering in that bacta tank on The Book of Boba Fett, even introduced the doctor who patched up Fennec, making it seem like he’d be back. But nothing! It feels like a total waste. Olyphant is a fantastic actor – seriously, have you seen Justified or Deadwood? He absolutely owns those roles, and Vanth feels like it would fit right in. He’s amazing at playing that morally gray, gunslinging Western type, and Star Wars could really use more of that. It’s just disappointing to see Lucasfilm leave someone with that much potential on the bench.

Many viewers believe Vanth was originally planned to appear in the Rangers of the New Republic series. The show was intended to star Gina Carano as Cara Dune, but she was let go from Star Wars due to controversial social media posts. However, The Book of Boba Fett had already been filmed and was scheduled for release around the same time. By the time that show aired, Disney likely hadn’t figured out a direction for Rangers of the New Republic. Given the fans’ strong positive reaction to Vanth and Timothy Olyphant’s performance, the character would have been a natural fit to lead the series.

Despite the low chances of it happening, many fans are still hoping for a Rangers of the New Republic series. The character Vanth has a lot of potential for compelling stories. He could be a great fit within the New Republic, working to bring peace and order to Tatooine. This could even lead to interesting interactions – either as allies or enemies – with Boba Fett. Cobb Vanth Could Return Sooner Than Fans Think

Recent comments from those involved, hinting at not being able to discuss Vanth, have led fans to speculate about his return. Although details are scarce, the film’s poster clearly links back to The Book of Boba Fett, featuring the Hutt Twins prominently. This suggests more trouble is brewing on Tatooine. If Din Djarin needs to return to the planet or clashes with the Hutts, Vanth could easily reappear, potentially working for the New Republic to hunt them down, or even teaming up with Boba Fett once again.

Another possibility for the character is Dave Filoni’s new Star Wars movie, which many believe will focus on the story of an Heir to the Empire. If a large-scale war breaks out again in the Star Wars universe, it would be logical for Disney and Lucasfilm to feature established characters like Din Djarin, Ahsoka, Phoenix Squadron, and Boba Fett. If these characters all play a role, it would also make sense to include Cobb Vanth, perhaps as an ally to Boba Fett, the New Republic, or even helping Din Djarin as he has previously. Timothy Olyphant is a fantastic actor, and expanding on Cobb Vanth’s story in Star Wars would be a great addition. It would be a missed opportunity not to bring him back in some capacity, given his talent and Western-style persona.
