Josh Safdie, the co-director of Uncut Gems and director of Marty Supreme, has shared that the film Marty Supreme, starring Timothée Chalamet, was initially planned to have a vampire-themed ending. The movie follows Marty Mauser’s determined journey to become a professional tennis player and is expected to be a strong contender for the 2026 Best Picture award.
Despite how wild the movie already is, director Josh Safdie shared on the A24 podcast that they considered an even more surprising ending. In this alternate version, Kevin O’Leary’s character would have been revealed as a vampire, attacking an elderly Marty. The scene would then fast-forward through the rest of Marty’s life, culminating in a 1980s Tears for Fears concert where “Mr. Wonderful” unexpectedly appears while Marty is with his granddaughter.
Safdie described a disturbing scene: ‘You see Timmy, we even made his prosthetic limbs, and then Mr. Wonderful appears and bites his neck—that’s the final image.’ He was speaking with director Sean Baker about the film Anora. The character played by O’Leary is Milton Rockwell, a businessman and the husband of Kay Stone, an actress who is having an affair with Marty.
In the movie, Rockwell’s character sharply replies to Marty, stating, “I was born in 1601. I’m a vampire. I’ve been around forever. I’ve met many Marty Mausers over the centuries.” According to director Safdie, actor O’Leary actually created this line while they were working with co-writer Ronald Bronstein to determine how Rockwell’s character would react to Marty’s beliefs.
Safdie recalled the reaction to the cut, saying people thought it was a mistake. However, he explained that the twist actually reinforced the film’s central ideas. He described how the movie’s music aimed to create a sense of timelessness, reflecting the way the past and future constantly influence each other.
You know, the Safdies told me about a scene they ended up cutting, and it really stuck with me. It showed Marty at a concert, right up front, and he’s just lost in thought while watching the show. He’s thinking about the song “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” and what it means to be young, and he’s realizing that even though he’s achieved success, he’s not actually doing what he feels he was meant to do. He’s surrounded by all this amazing stuff, but it doesn’t feel right, you know?
The final scene of Marty Supreme shows Marty, after winning a public table tennis match against the world champion, coming home to Rachel (Odessa A’zion). He had left her injured and in labor at the hospital to travel to Japan. The movie ends with Marty crying as he looks at his baby, finally prepared to be a father.
Kay’s attempt to return to the stage fell flat when her new play received a scathing review, and Rockwell completely lost interest in Marty after Marty ruined their scheme. They had planned for Marty to deliberately lose a wrestling match in Japan, but when he didn’t, Rockwell abandoned him and refused to pay for his return trip. Marty ended up getting a ride home with the American soldiers who were already heading back from the event.
With a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and several major award nominations, it’s clear the filmmakers made the right choice with the ending they selected. However, the original, alternate ending involving vampires still connects to themes and details that made it into the final cut of the film.
