Timothee Chalamet’s ‘A Complete Unknown’ Crosses $100 Million Globally

The musical biography ‘A Complete Unknown,’ featuring Timothée Chalamet portraying the role of Bob Dylan, the composer of ‘Like a Rolling Stone,’ has achieved a significant feat at the box office by grossing over $100 million worldwide from ticket sales.

Over a span of seven weeks, the movie “A Complete Unknown” has earned $100 million worldwide, with $70 million in North America and $30 million internationally. This R-rated film currently holds the sixth spot among Searchlight’s highest-grossing domestic releases ever, and is projected to surpass “Sideways” ($71.5 million) to enter the top five in the upcoming weeks.

The film “A Complete Unknown,” directed by James Mangold (“Walk the Line”), had a production budget estimated between $60 million and $70 million. Given that movie theater owners typically retain around half of ticket sales, it’s unlikely that “A Complete Unknown” will make a profit during its cinema release. However, considering the current context, it’s quite an achievement for a niche film to surpass the $100 million mark in earnings.

On Christmas Day, “A Complete Unknown” was unveiled by Searchlight Pictures, surpassing forecasts with an opening weekend gross of $11.6 million and a total of $23.2 million in its first five days. This marked the second-largest opening for the studio, trailing only 2009’s “Notorious” ($20.4 million over the traditional weekend). The film’s success was primarily driven by an older audience, and ticket sales remained consistent in subsequent weeks. A significant boost was experienced when the movie garnered eight Oscar nominations, including nods for best picture, director (Mangold), and actor (Chalamet).

In the bustling city of New York during the early ’60s, this story unfolds, focusing on Dylan, a mysterious 19-year-old who makes his entrance in Greenwich Village. Later, he sparks a commotion within the folk society when he decides to play an electric guitar. The film “A Complete Unknown,” named after the lyrics from “Like a Rolling Stone,” boasts an extensive ensemble including Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, Dan Fogler as Albert Grossman, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.
