Some actors prioritize artistic merit over commercial success, choosing smaller, less mainstream projects to create meaningful work. This is generally admired in Hollywood. However, Timothée Chalamet’s recent focus on personal artistic growth, and openly discussing his reasons for choosing roles, has drawn criticism. Despite the backlash, he’s refusing to apologize for prioritizing his own development as an actor, and that’s something I really appreciate.
Timothée Chalamet recently discussed his new movie, Marty Supreme, which is receiving excellent feedback. In an interview with IndieWire, he was asked if he planned to be more cautious with his public statements, given recent criticism. Here’s his response…
I made this film in the same passionate way Marty Scorsese approaches his work, and I believe it’s a truly original story – something that’s rare these days. It’s about chasing a goal, and I’m doing everything I can to share it with as many people as possible, from promotional events to interviews and everything in between. I’m giving it my all.
People have noticed Timothée Chalamet’s strong self-assurance before. He recently discussed a speech he gave at the SAG Awards – where he stated his ambition to become one of the best – on a podcast with wrestler Cody Rhodes. While some found his directness about his career goals a bit surprising, he defended his intentions then, just as he’s doing now, and didn’t offer an apology.
People often talk about the great actors like De Niro and Daniel Day-Lewis with a lot of fondness. But as someone newer to the scene, like me, it’s a reminder that we’re still carrying on that tradition and doing good work too.
The reaction on social media, particularly among film fans, has largely been critical, but recently, many viewers with different perspectives have been voicing their disagreement. A common point of discussion is that Timothée Chalamet often presents himself more like an athlete than a traditional actor, and as someone who enjoys both film and sports, I find that observation to be very accurate.
This acclaimed actor, nominated for an Oscar twice and likely to be nominated again, is a big fan of sports and professional wrestling. He’s a regular attendee at New York Knicks games, and his descriptions of pursuing success are remarkably similar to the way many professional athletes talk. In the world of professional sports, athletes are expected to openly discuss their dedication to training and their desire to improve and achieve greatness.
In Hollywood, there’s a strong expectation that people stay humble and express gratitude for their opportunities. I understand why – a lot of success in the industry comes from who you know, and even with talent, a lot depends on luck.
I’m not saying success is only about deserving it, but it’s a clear fact that some people work incredibly hard and really seize their opportunities. It wasn’t luck that a relatively unknown Jonah Hill made such an impact in his short scene in 40 Year Old Virgin, and it wasn’t coincidence that Viola Davis received an Oscar nomination despite only being on screen for ten minutes in Doubt. Ultimately, the most talented individuals are the ones who truly shine.
It’s refreshing that Timothée Chalamet openly strives for excellence. While some might see it as boastful, it reminds me of an athlete dedicated to improving their game. I appreciate his ambition and I’m excited to see what he accomplishes throughout his career.
