Timothée Chalamet Becomes Youngest Two-Time Best Actor Nominee Since James Dean

At age 29, Timothée Chalamet secured his second Oscar nomination for portraying young Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.” This achievement placed him within an exclusive group in Academy Award history: Men who’ve received two leading actor nominations before reaching the age of 30.

Mark Harris, a renowned film journalist and historian, first pointed out on Bluesky that the last performer to receive back-to-back nominations for leading roles before their 30th birthday was James Dean. Tragically, he passed away in a car accident at just 24 years old, having been nominated posthumously for his work in the 1955 period family drama “East of Eden” and the 1956 Western drama “Giant”. Interestingly, before James Dean, only Mickey Rooney managed to earn two leading category nominations by the age of 30. He was nominated for best actor at 19 for the musical “Babes in Arms”, directed by Busby Berkeley, and then again at 23 for “The Human Comedy”, which, in fact, was a blend of drama and comedy.

At just 22 years old when he received his first best actor nomination for “Call Me By Your Name” in 2017, Timothée Chalamet became the third youngest actor ever to be nominated in that category. He followed in the footsteps of Rooney and Jackie Cooper, who were both nominated at even younger ages: Rooney was recognized for his work in a comedy film titled “Skippy” when he was 19, while Jackie Cooper earned his nomination for the same movie at the tender age of 9.

In contrast to the rarity of Oscar nods for male leads under thirty, a notable number of actresses have amassed multiple nominations before reaching the age of 30. This list includes Joan Fontaine (for “Rebecca” in the 1940s, “Suspicion” in 1941, and “The Constant Nymph” in 1943), Audrey Hepburn (nominated for “Roman Holiday” in 1953 and “Sabrina” in 1954), Jodie Foster (for “The Accused” in 1988 and “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1991), and Kate Winslet (nominated for “Titanic” in 1997 and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” in 2004). Notably, two of Timothée Chalamet’s co-stars have also earned this distinction: Saoirse Ronan (for “Brooklyn” in 2015, “Lady Bird” in 2017, and “Little Women” in 2019) and Jennifer Lawrence (nominated for “Winter’s Bone” in 2010, “Silver Lining’s Playbook” in 2012, and “Joy” in 2015).

Currently, Adrien Brody still holds the title as the youngest actor to win a Best Actor award. He claimed this honor at the age of 29 for his role in “The Pianist” (2002), and he was also nominated this year for his performance in “The Brutalist.
