I’m so excited! TimeSplitters Rewind, which is basically a fresh take on the classic TimeSplitters games, is finally out! And the best part? It’s totally free to download on PC, and the people who own the rights to TimeSplitters officially approve of it. It’s a dream come true for fans like me!
TimeSplitters, TimeSplitters 2, and TimeSplitters: Future Perfect were popular first-person shooter games made in the early 2000s by the British studio Free Radical. While working on a fourth game in the series, Free Radical went bankrupt in 2008 and was then acquired by Crytek, the company known for the Crysis games.
In 2013, Crytek officially supported a fan-led effort to revive the TimeSplitters series, even providing original game files. When the rights to TimeSplitters moved to THQ Nordic (now part of Embracer Group), they continued to honor Crytek’s support for the fan project and briefly brought back the original development studio, Free Radical, hoping to fully relaunch the TimeSplitters franchise.
It was a bummer when Free Radical closed down again in 2023, but thankfully, the fans kept the dream alive! That dedication finally paid off with the release of TimeSplitters Rewind. It’s not a straight-up remake, though – think of it as the ultimate TimeSplitters experience, packed with all the best maps, modes, and story bits from the original trilogy, but completely rebuilt from scratch.
According to the project’s description, Rewind isn’t a simple remake with separate files for each game. Instead, it’s a single, unified game designed to feel like three classic titles rolled into one. This means it’s a distinct game, not just an updated collection. While the developers aim for a massive amount of content eventually, covering all three games, the first release will include a selection of both familiar and brand-new material.
After many delays and changes in leadership over the years, TimeSplitters Rewind is now available in early access. Despite being a work in progress, it already offers a substantial amount of content, including 28 multiplayer maps, 96 characters, 41 weapons, a new team elimination mode, and the complete story mode from the original TimeSplitters game. The developers plan to add even more content in future updates, such as new story campaigns, maps, characters, game modes, and features requested by the community.
“Sorry it’s taken us so long,” the project’s website reads. “We’ve only been making the largest free video game ever.”
If you’re curious about TimeSplitters Rewind, you can download the fan-created game from its official website. Last year, the original TimeSplitters trilogy also became available again on PlayStation 4 and PS5, and PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers get them at no extra cost.
