Tim Roth has hinted at reprising his role as Emil Blonsky, also known as Abomination. This could be a significant development not just for a potential Avengers: Doomsday movie, but for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. Roth first played Blonsky in The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, and after a 13-year break, he returned in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings in 2021. Although his return hasn’t been officially confirmed after appearing in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law last year, many believe there’s a place for his character in upcoming projects.
Several characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe are confirmed to reappear in Avengers: Doomsday, coming to theaters later this year. So far, no versions of the Hulk or characters connected to him are included, but with multiple Avengers teams expected to assemble, there’s a good chance some could show up. This potentially allows for the return of the Abomination, who might even get the opportunity to join a new team of heroes.
Tim Roth Is Ready for the Abomination’s Return to the MCU
I remember when Emil Blonsky, this really skilled former soldier, got caught up in the whole Hulk thing in The Incredible Hulk. General Ross injected him with this crazy super-soldier serum, and it just… unhinged him. He became obsessed with taking down the Hulk, to the point where he practically forced a scientist named Samuel Sterns to give him Bruce Banner’s gamma-irradiated blood! That’s how he became the Abomination. He caused a ton of damage in the Battle of Harlem and was locked up for years. But lately, it seems like he’s been trying to make amends for everything he did.
Despite being re-imprisoned after Jennifer Walters changed the ending of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, Emil Blonsky was freed from Damage Control custody by Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme. Though his return hasn’t been officially confirmed, Tim Roth recently mentioned he’d be happy to reprise his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He simply said it would be “fun,” implying he and the character would both enjoy coming back to Marvel Studios.
The change was amazing for him, completely altering who he was. He now appears to have good intentions, simply wanting to help people through retreats and workshops, though this leads to his re-incarceration. Having been released and now likely living with Wong at Kamar-Taj, he has a real opportunity to use his powers for good.
Wong Could Be Building His Own Avengers Team in Avengers: Doomsday
Following recent events in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many fans speculate that Wong, now the Sorcerer Supreme, is assembling a new team of heroes. This team could potentially join forces with established groups like the Avengers, Fantastic Four, and X-Men in a future Avengers: Doomsday film. This creates an opportunity for characters like the Abomination to return and become genuine heroes. Marvel has already hinted at other potential members of Wong’s team.
Besides the Abomination, Wong is connected to several other characters linked to the Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, he communicated with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), who appeared as a hologram to learn more about Shang-Chi’s magical rings. She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters, also worked with Wong – he even asked for her help with a minor demonic issue – meaning both cousins could potentially join his team.
Bruce Banner wasn’t the only Avenger to make an appearance in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; Captain Marvel also showed up as a holographic image. Captain Marvel has become a key hero in the MCU’s Multiverse Saga, particularly after teaming up with Kamala Khan. There’s also a possibility she’ll join forces with Spider-Man, since Wong and Peter Parker met in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Shang-Chi’s fighting skills and mastery of the Ten Rings, along with Katy’s excellent marksmanship displayed in Ta Lo, make both of them strong possibilities to join Wong’s new Avengers team. As seen in the 2022 film Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Wong also recruited America Chavez, a traveler from across the multiverse, who could be crucial in any future conflict with Doctor Doom.
With Doctor Strange away from Earth dealing with dimensional threats alongside Clea, Wong might need to find another magical ally. Bringing back Wanda Maximoff as the Scarlet Witch, even though she previously died, could give her a chance to make amends and add an incredibly powerful hero to their team.
Wong’s Avengers Team Would Be the Most Powerful in Avengers: Doomsday
Two teams of Avengers are set to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, along with the Fantastic Four from Earth-828 and the X-Men from Earth-10005. One team, led by Sam Wilson’s Captain America, includes Falcon, Ant-Man, Thor, and Shang-Chi. The original Thunderbolts have also been reformed as a new Avengers group. However, Wong is assembling a team that will be even more powerful than either of these.
I’m so hyped for this! We’re going to see Yelena Belova, Ghost, and all the super-soldiers – Bucky, Red Guardian, and US Agent – team up. And Sentry? He’s supposed to be unbelievably powerful, but I’m a little worried that might also bring out his darker side. Luckily, Wong’s team seems like our best bet to handle both Sentry and Doctor Doom at the same time. It’s going to be epic!
A team-up of characters like Wong, the Hulk, She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Shang-Chi, Katy, America Chavez, the Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange, and Clea would be an amazing addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Currently, only Shang-Chi is confirmed to appear in Phase 6, but with Tim Roth expressing interest in returning as the Abomination, many other characters could potentially join him. Shang-Chi hasn’t been seen in five years, so his return is particularly exciting.
