As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the return of Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear in “Toy Story 5” is nothing short of nostalgic bliss. Having grown up with these characters since their debut in 1995, it’s akin to revisiting old friends who’ve managed to age gracefully while maintaining their charm.
Tim Allen recently told Collider that he completed his “first five-hour [recording] session for Buzz” Lightyear’s return in Disney and Pixar’s upcoming “Toy Story 5.” The comedian has been voicing Buzz since the original “Toy Story” film in 1995 opposite Tom Hanks as the voice of Woody. He said “it’s really weird” to find his Buzz voice again, five years after the release of “Toy Story 4.”
Allen playfully hinted at the upcoming fifth movie being exceptionally smart in its plot. He questioned if you were interested in five more of these films. Allen doesn’t think money is the driving force, but rather the desire for success. If they hadn’t conceived an outstanding script, they wouldn’t have gone ahead with it and they wouldn’t have contacted him or Tom [Hanks]. The storyline is quite clever indeed.
Allen mentioned that his first session for ‘Toy Story 5’ was quite challenging, but after approximately two hours, he found himself voicing Buzz. To be candid, I feel incredibly fortunate to portray Buzz Lightyear. It promises to be an enjoyable experience. We’re roughly a year away from release. So far, I’ve reached the third act. We’ll work on that first, then refine it. After that, I’ll likely record it another five times. The story is truly impressive, trust me.
Andrew Stanton is leading the production of “Toy Story 5,” a film that will focus on Buzz, Woody, and the rest of the toy characters as they face off against modern electronic devices that have taken over children’s interest. Notably, Stanton has contributed to the screenplays for all the “Toy Story” films and has received Oscars for his exceptional work on Pixar productions such as “Finding Nemo” and “Wall-E.
Although some people might view “Toy Story 5” as merely a money-making venture, history has shown that this franchise consistently surpasses expectations. Previous films like “Toy Story 4” initially raised concerns but eventually garnered critical acclaim and raked in over $1 billion globally. Notably, it broke the record for the biggest animated film launch with $244.5 million and even won an Oscar for best animated feature. Similarly, “Toy Story 3” also received an Oscar and grossed more than a billion dollars.
“Toy Story 5” is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026 from Disney.
