A TikTok video showcasing a seemingly perfect, AI-created retirement home is circulating online, but many viewers are upset to discover it’s not real.
AI-created videos are appearing more and more online, and recent advancements like OpenAI’s Sora 2 are making them incredibly realistic.
Even though many fake videos still have obvious flaws – like extra fingers, mismatched lip movements, or distorted logos – the TikTok account Basin Creek Retirement has discovered methods to minimize these issues.
An account with over 63,000 followers is pretending to be a retirement home. It’s become popular by posting videos of people dressed up in Halloween costumes, claiming they’re residents, but the whole thing is a hoax.
Basin Creek Retirement Home is actually all AI
So, this TikTok account really blew up around Halloween. They were posting videos of elderly people dressing up, and it was hilarious! One guy pretended to be Raising Cane’s – seriously, he just held up two walking canes! Another dressed as a chipmunk, which was even better – he wore a monk’s outfit and had chip packets stuck to his chest. It was seriously good content!
These videos are so realistic that people often think they’re genuine, and some have even gone viral with over 2 million views. However, viewers are often very disappointed to discover they’re actually fake.
People expressed distress upon realizing the video was created by AI. One user said it was deeply upsetting, while another argued that AI-generated videos should be clearly labeled. A third commenter admitted this was the first AI video they initially believed was real, and expressed feeling frightened by the development.
The Basin Creek account clearly states in its profile that the videos are created using artificial intelligence. Its bio describes the content as “A fictional world made with AI & a lot of heart.”
If you’re quickly browsing, you might miss it. Also, not all videos have the label indicating they were created using AI, like some TikToks do.
Their online store, which sells a lot of hoodies and t-shirts featuring content from their Halloween videos, now includes a more detailed disclaimer.
This project is simply meant to be fun and let us express our creativity – a little nudge to remember there’s still humor to be found in the world. While the setting of Basin Creek might be fictional, the joy it brings – and the products inspired by it – are very real, according to its creators.
