TikTok user Tea Tyme was arrested after being accused of hitting and killing someone with her car while broadcasting live on the platform. The incident happened almost two months ago.
I was shocked to hear that Tynesha McCarty-Wroten, the influencer everyone knows, was arrested on Christmas Eve! Apparently, the police in Zion are connecting her to the death of Darren Lucas, a 59-year-old man, back in November. It’s just really sad and surprising news.
Zion Police Lieutenant Paul Kehrli stated that 43-year-old Elizabeth McCarty-Wroten has been charged with felony offenses, including reckless homicide and using a communication device in a way that led to a death.
Depending on specific circumstances, a conviction could result in a prison sentence of several years, or even longer than ten years.
Crash allegedly happened on TikTok livestream
I was shocked to hear what happened! Apparently, this woman, McCarty-Wroten, was actually broadcasting live on TikTok while she was driving near Zion, Illinois – that’s just north of Chicago. While she was doing that, she sadly hit a young man named Lucas as he was walking across the street near his house in Beach Park. It’s just awful.
The livestream audio apparently recorded a loud impact, immediately after which McCarty-Wroten exclaimed a profanity and said she thought she had hit someone. A child’s voice can then be heard asking what occurred, and the stream ended suddenly.
I was really shocked to hear about Lucas. Apparently, he was found passed out, and sadly, they couldn’t save him at the hospital. It looks like he suffered some serious injuries, like he’d been hit really hard.
Charges filed weeks later
Ms. McCarty-Wroten stayed at the scene and helped with the investigation at first. She wasn’t arrested or charged right away.
After discovering a video that appeared to show the crash happening during a TikTok livestream connected to McCarty-Wroten’s account, police focused their investigation further. The account was then made private, and any mention of Zion as the user’s location was taken down.
Police stated that after the crash, many people contacted Zion Investigators about a TikTok video supposedly showing Ms. McCarty-Wroten live-streaming while driving at the time of the incident. The video was saved and confirmed through a thorough investigation, which involved obtaining search warrants and examining electronic data.
Court documents obtained by The Guardian show the suspect faces charges of reckless homicide and using a communication device in a way that led to a death.
Lucas’s son-in-law, Chris King, said the family was informed of the arrest earlier this week.

“The family and myself are glad to see the wheels of justice moving,” King said.
Following Lucas’s death, Tea Tyme received criticism for hosting a livestream where she asked viewers for Cash App donations, saying she needed the money to take a break from the internet for her mental health.
She said, according to an online recording, “I really don’t like asking for help, but if anyone is willing to support me, my CashApp is available.”
Following Lucas’s passing, his family started a GoFundMe to help his wife, who King said meant the world to him.
The case remains under investigation.
