TikToker flies to Turkey to buy groceries and still manages to save money

TikTok creator Jordon Cox took a six-hour flight to Turkey to see if he could save money on groceries compared to shopping at his local Tesco supermarket.

A TikTok user known as the ‘Coupon King’ filmed a quick trip to both the UK and Turkey to see if the savings from cheaper supermarket prices in Turkey would cover the cost of his travel. He shared his price comparison on his TikTok account.

Cox managed to book round-trip flights for £33 and a round-trip tram ride to the city center for £1.44. To cover these costs, he needed to save at least £35 on his grocery bill.

Jordon Cox compares Tesco prices to Turkish supermarket haul

While shopping at the Turkish supermarket BIM, Cox noticed that some items were cheaper than similar products in the UK.

He highlighted significant savings on Oral B products, selling them for £1.71 each compared to £5 at Tesco. He also showed a multipack of Cocoa Pops for £2.24, claiming it would cost over £10 in UK stores. Other deals included Doritos for 84p (versus £2.50 at Tesco), Haribo for 49p, foundation for £1.46, and wet wipes for just 18p.

So, after my shopping trip, I did a little comparison when I got back to the UK. It turns out the exact same groceries would’ve cost me £89.31 at Tesco! It was quite a difference.

He explained that the same groceries would have cost £89.31 at Tesco, but he only paid £34 in Turkey, saving him around £20. This makes you wonder if supermarket prices are becoming excessive.

“This proves that we are being absolutely ripped off by the supermarkets,” one user commented.

Another said: “That’s some difference! British prices have gone through the roof!”

“I just shop at Aldi or Lidl it’s the same outcome minus flight,” shared a third.

Erewhon is another incredibly pricey supermarket, known for its high-end items like $20 water bottles and $27 tuna sushi. This Los Angeles-based grocery store is famous for its expensive offerings.
