TikTok’s owner, ByteDance, addressed concerns from Disney after its AI tool, Seedance, created videos featuring characters and scenes from Star Wars and other Disney franchises.
Recently, a lot of AI tools have become available, and many of them can create videos and images from simple text descriptions. Tools like Grok, Veo 3, and Sora 2 are examples, and they’ve all shown the ability to produce really impressive visuals.
Seedance 2.0, a new tool from the creators of TikTok (ByteDance), is generating a lot of buzz with its ability to create surprisingly high-quality videos. Users are reporting success in creating entire episodes of popular shows like Dragon Ball Z and Pokémon, and even compiling highlight reels from events like the Winter Olympics.
The AI tool is facing criticism due to significant copyright concerns. These include a widely shared, fabricated video featuring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt in a fight, and the unauthorized use of characters and content owned by Disney.
ByteDance answers Disney threat over Seedance using copyrighted clips
On February 13th, Disney sent a legal notice to ByteDance demanding they stop using clips from Marvel and Star Wars that had gone viral. Disney claims ByteDance used these clips without permission – essentially, they say it was piracy. Interestingly, Disney had recently signed a $1 billion agreement with Sora 2 in December, granting them exclusive rights to these properties.
So, ByteDance finally got back to the BBC about all the fuss over Seedance 2.0 on February 15th. Basically, they said they’re aware people are worried about it.

According to the BBC, ByteDance hasn’t revealed what information it’s using to develop Seedance. They’ve also blocked users from uploading photos of real people or places.
It’s still unclear if the new protections will completely stop the use of copyrighted material, or if some will still find ways to bypass them.
