‘Tiger’s Pond’: A Crime Drama Set to Make Kannada History at Berlin Film Festival

The upcoming movie “Tiger’s Pond,” directed by rising Indian filmmaker Natesh Hegde, is set to create history by being the first Kannada-language film ever shown in the Forum section of the Berlin International Film Festival.

The gritty, crime-focused movie, boasting worldwide distribution rights managed by the esteemed French company Loco Films, is backed by renowned director Anurag Kashyap.

The filmmakers have unveiled a teaser.

The movie unfolds in the enigmatic village of Vaghachipani, where a tiger deity reigns over a shattered realm. It tells the story of a merciless entrepreneur trying to control local elections, but encounters unforeseen challenges from an outcast villager. At its core is Pathi, a mute servant girl whose role becomes crucial in delving into themes of power, faith, and caste relations prevalent in Southern India.

In this rephrased version, I aimed to maintain the original meaning while using more straightforward language that’s easy for readers to understand.

In an interview with EbMaster, Hegde shares that Pathi’s character was instrumental in the development of the movie. “She stands alone as the main human focus,” Hegde explains, “with all forms of power-hungry desires revolving around her.” He further adds, “The film’s narrative mirrors our current state where individuals have become mere statistics. Therefore, the story is particularly significant and timely.

Hegde presents his vision for collaboration with his audience while creating films, stating that “from the start of my filmmaking journey, I’ve felt that the audience and I jointly shape the narrative.” He explains that he aims to provide a multi-sensory experience in his films, allowing them to resonate deeply within human emotions. The act of watching the story unfold can be therapeutic or cleansing, he suggests.

The movie’s universal appeal stems from its core human themes, even though it takes place in a specific location. “It’s a story about people that includes elements of a crime thriller,” Hegde points out. “In my opinion, the film is a modern-day fable,” he continues. “The exploration of the human condition definitely strikes a chord with viewers around the world.

Filmed beautifully in 16mm, showcasing vibrant textures and ominous depths as per the narrative, this film boasts a talented cast including Dileesh Pothan, Achyut Kumar, Natesh Hegde, Gopal Hegde, and Sumitra. This production is a joint effort by Kashyap, Jeremy Chua – a renowned producer based in Singapore who won at Cannes with “Inside the Yellow Cocoon Shell,” and Ranjan Singh, whose work “Kennedy” was selected for Cannes.

Kashyap finds this tale to be both sincere and exhilarating, having produced ‘The Lunchbox’, a film renowned worldwide. Upon being given the opportunity to join its narrative, he made an immediate decision. Natesh’s storytelling is so natural and seamless that it draws you right into the world where the action unfolds.”

Or:

“According to Kashyap, this narrative is both genuine and captivating, as his producing credits include ‘The Lunchbox’, a critically acclaimed film. When he was presented with the chance to be part of its development, it was an easy decision for him. Natesh’s storytelling is so effortless and fluid that it immerses you in the environment where the events unfold.

For Hegde, whose first movie “Pedro” received recognition at significant film festivals such as Busan and London, the Berlin premiere signifies a highly personal milestone that is emotionally significant not just for him but also for his village, who played an essential role in making the film. As he puts it, “This moment holds great emotional value for me and my community.

The movie titled “Tiger’s Pond” commenced its path at the Asian Project Market in Busan back in 2022. Its journey was sparked by the achievement of “Pedro,” a film that awarded Hegde with best director at Pingyao and best film at the Nantes Three Continents Festival. Crucially, the project gained early backing from actor-filmmaker Rishab Shetty, whose support, as Hegde acknowledges, was instrumental in getting this movie off the ground. Without Shetty’s assistance, he states, “Tiger’s Pond” wouldn’t have been made.

As a movie reviewer, I’m thrilled to embark on the global journey of ‘Vagachipani’, which kicks off at Berlinale. I have high hopes that this film will touch hearts and minds, transcending cultural boundaries and captivating audiences worldwide.

The movie will have its first showing worldwide on February 15, in Berlin, which is a noteworthy milestone for Kannada-language films on an international platform.

The initial sneak peek, set at a gas station, hints at an undercurrent of intense stress about to erupt beneath the tranquil charm of rural living.
