The rise of streaming services completely transformed television. Platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and HBO Max ushered in a new era of high-quality TV, and a surprising result has been the shift of many stories originally planned as movies into TV shows or limited series—particularly within the thriller genre and popular book series.
Adapting books for the screen isn’t new – classics like The Lord of the Rings and The Godfather prove that. While TV has always shown both adaptations and original stories, recently HBO has been creating more series based on popular novels. Especially in the thriller genre, streaming services are now heavily featuring stories first published as books.
Book Adaptations Like 56 Days Are Dominating the Streaming Charts
Premiering on Prime Video on February 18, 2026, 56 Days is a series adapted from the popular novel of the same name. It stars Avan Jogia, known from Victorious, as Oliver Kennedy, and Dove Cameron, from Liv and Maddie, as Ciara Wyse. The story follows their passionate relationship, which tragically ends in death.
Since it first came out, the show topped the charts for weeks, until the release of the popular series Young Sherlock. Now, 56 Days is the second most-watched show on Prime Video, showing it’s still incredibly popular.
The new miniseries, based on the popular novel, quickly became a hit, topping Netflix’s most-watched list for several weeks. It centers around Anna Andrews and Detective Jack Harper – played by Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal – as they work to solve a string of murders in their close-knit community.
Recent TV thrillers like 56 Days and His & Hers represent a clear change in the genre. Adapting popular novels for television is increasingly common, particularly with crime thrillers, as seen in shows such as Dept. Q and Ballard, all of which are based on books.
Thriller Book Novels Are Re-Shaping Streaming in 2026
The popularity of shows like Netflix’s His & Hers and Prime Video’s 56 Days signaled a turning point for streaming platforms, particularly in the thriller category. With more adaptations of books expected in 2026, it’s clear these projects are changing how streaming services operate and ushering in a fresh wave of crime thrillers.
On March 11, 2026, Prime Video will premiere a new crime thriller starring Nicole Kidman as Kay Scarpetta, a doctor who investigates crimes. Prime Video has become known for adapting popular crime novels into successful shows, including series like Bosch, Ballard, Cross, and Reacher, all of which are based on bestselling books.
Apple TV will premiere a new series featuring Elisabeth Moss, Kerry Washington, and Kate Mara on March 18, 2026. Currently, the popular series The Last Thing He Told Me, which is based on a novel, has just released its second season. This new season is based on the book’s sequel, The First Time I Saw Him, and is performing very well on streaming platforms.
Fans of thriller books have several adaptations to look forward to in 2026. Among them are adaptations of the psychological thriller The Executioners, scheduled for release in June, and Lucky, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, also expected sometime in 2026.
As a huge film and TV fan, I’m keeping an eye on a bunch of book-to-screen projects, and it’s exciting to see what’s coming! While we don’t have release dates yet, adaptations of books like Sally Hepworth’s Darling Girls, Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods, and Liane Moriarty’s Here One Moment are definitely happening. They’re all being developed for streaming platforms – think Netflix, Peacock, and Apple TV – so I’m really looking forward to seeing these stories brought to life.
The popularity of adapting books for television is clear, particularly in the thriller genre. Streaming services are increasingly turning to thriller novels for new shows and limited series, fundamentally changing how these stories are told. This trend is fueled by “BookTok,” the book-focused community on TikTok, which rapidly boosts book sales and will likely lead to even more adaptations, permanently altering the landscape of streaming television.
