The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, marks Chris Hemsworth’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Phase 6 approaches its conclusion. Thor will once again join the franchise, and he’ll face off against Robert Downey Jr., who will be playing Doctor Doom from across the multiverse.
Chris Hemsworth discussed Thor’s journey in a recent interview with BroBible, reflecting on the different directors who have shaped the character since 2011. The publication asked him what he felt was the most significant aspect of Thor’s development over the past 15 years.
Hemsworth began by thanking the interviewer for the compliment. He explained that the character of Thor evolved with each movie, recalling that the first films directed by Kenneth Branagh were a fresh start. He fondly remembered working with Branagh, praising him as a detailed and collaborative director. Later, Hemsworth noted that subsequent directors had varying visions for the character – some understood Thor well, while others didn’t.
He pointed out that even the writers themselves acknowledged they struggled with the character of Thor, as Chris Hemsworth recalled Joss Whedon saying it was a difficult character to write, particularly after he became so powerful. It wasn’t until the films directed by Taika Waititi that Hemsworth started to feel unhappy with where the character was going.
Chris Hemsworth explained that he was feeling creatively stuck before working with Taika Waititi. Waititi shared a similar feeling, and they decided to try something new together. Hemsworth hopes this collaboration brought a fresh, unexpected element to his portrayal of Thor. He also expressed satisfaction with the increased impact his role now has, especially as Thor was involved in the Avengers: Doomsday storyline.
In the later movies, I felt like my character, Thor, had truly become a leader among the Avengers. Earlier on, I felt like the newcomer. I remember being on set during the battle scenes in ‘Doomsday’ with a lot of actors who were new to the Avengers films, and realizing I needed to take more ownership of the character’s voice and opinions. Embracing that, and considering his age – he’s supposed to be around 2,000 years old – helped me portray him as one of the more experienced heroes.
You know, watching Thor lately, I’ve really gotten the feeling he’s just done. Like, he’s seen so much crazy stuff over the years, faced so many threats, and he’s genuinely exhausted. It’s not just physical tiredness, it’s an emotional weariness – he’s just over it all, and it really comes through in his performance.
Chris Hemsworth chuckled and agreed, saying that you eventually get to a stage in life where you feel tired and worn out, and they really focused on portraying that feeling.
Marvel Studios has been hinting at the bigger picture for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie since December 2025, sharing four short previews. While principal filming wrapped up in September 2025, the studio is planning some extra shooting with cast members this spring.
There’s no news yet on when the next trailer for Avengers: Doomsday will be released. Marvel Studios plans to begin filming Avengers: Secret Wars this summer, and the Russo brothers will be directing.
Avengers: Doomsday opens on December 18.
