Now that Thanksgiving has passed, the Christmas season is almost here. If you’re looking for something a bit different – and maybe even a little aggressive – to watch, Netflix has a suggestion. “The Northman,” a brutal Viking film with Alexander Skarsgård, is a great choice for a dark, winter evening, even if it doesn’t exactly feel festive.
Released in 2022, The Northman is the third feature film from director Robert Eggers, following The Witch (2015) and The Lighthouse (2019). He’s currently working on Nosferatu, due in 2024. Eggers co-wrote The Northman with Icelandic writer Sjón, drawing inspiration from the Danish legend of Amleth – the same story that inspired Shakespeare’s Hamlet – and incorporating elements of Norse mythology.
The movie centers on Amleth, a Viking prince played by Skarsgård, who goes on a journey to avenge his father’s death at the hands of his uncle. The cast also includes Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang, Anya Taylor-Joy, Gustav Lindh, Ethan Hawke, Björk, and Willem Dafoe.
The film follows Amleth’s violent pursuit of revenge, with very few lighthearted moments. It does feature some snowy landscapes, which is a plus.
The Northman Starts Streaming on Netflix on December 3
Despite receiving rave reviews, the film The Northman didn’t perform well at the box office. It currently holds a 90% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics calling it a visually stunning and brutal revenge story that showcases director Robert Eggers’ unique style.
Despite costing around $70 million to make (and even more when you include advertising), The Northman didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $69.6 million. Luckily, the film found success on streaming services, reportedly earning enough to cover the losses from its disappointing theatrical release.
In 2022, director Robert Eggers told The Daily Beast he was a little frustrated that his film moved to streaming just three or four weeks after its release, as that’s become common since the pandemic. However, he added that the film was performing very well on streaming platforms, which was a positive outcome.
You can start watching The Northman on Netflix December 3rd. If you enjoy the films of director Robert Eggers, his earlier movies The Witch and The Lighthouse are available on HBO Max, and Nosferatu is on Prime Video.
