As a dedicated fan of gripping dramas based on true events, I am absolutely thrilled to learn about “The Witness” starring Jordan Bolger and Max Fincham on Netflix next year. The story of Rachel Nickell’s tragic murder and its aftermath is one that has always resonated with me, particularly the resilience shown by André Hanscombe in raising his son Alex amidst such unimaginable adversity.
Jordan Bolger (“This Town”) and Max Fincham (“Invasion”) will be playing the main roles in the forthcoming Netflix series titled “The Witness.
The movie “The Witness” delves into the events following the horrific murder of Rachel Nickell in 1992, a crime that occurred in full view of her two-year-old son Alex in a London park. The film portrays the ripple effects of this tragedy, including an innocent man being falsely accused and convicted, before the true culprit was finally apprehended over fifteen years later.
Meanwhile, I found myself, as a doting dad and film enthusiast, shouldering the responsibilities of single parenthood with our newborn boy, while my partner André Hanscombe was off living life on his own terms.
In this series, Bolger takes on the role of André, while Fincham portrays a teenage version of Alex. Both the genuine André and Alex Hanscombe provided their insights for the show.
Completing the ensemble are Neil Maskell (from “Hijack”) portraying DI Keith Pedder, Kevin Eldon (“Rings of Power”) as DCI Mick Wickerson, Mark Stanley (“Happy Valley”) in the role of DS Ivan Agnew, Jon Pointing (“Sweetpea”) as DC Nick Sparshatt, James Dryden (“Deadpool & Wolverine”) as DC Paul Miller, Kerry Godliman (“After Life”) taking on the part of André’s mother June, James Bradshaw (“Endeavour”) as DCI Tony Nash and Claire Rushbrook (“Rivals”) as Dr. Jean Harris-Hendriks.
Rachel Nickell was tragically murdered on Wimbledon Common in 1992, leaving André as a sudden single parent. Despite his own heartache, he prioritized his young son Alex, who had witnessed the attack, above all else. As they faced a whirlwind of intrusive media attention and an intense police investigation, André’s focus remained on his son’s wellbeing. This is a tale of how a father and son journeyed through the shadows of unspeakable sorrow towards hope and healing.
The three-act play was penned and conceived by Rob Williams, who is known for “The Victim,” and skillfully brought to life by director Alex Winckler, recognized for “Mary and George.
As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to be part of the production team for this captivating series. Alongside Sarah Brown, Williams serves as an executive producer, while John Yorke also lends his expertise. The visionary Alison Sterling is our dedicated producer, and it’s STV Studios that bring this project to life.
“The Witness” is set to premiere on Netflix in 2025.
