As someone who has spent countless hours huddled around a screen, controller in hand, lost in the gritty world of Call of Duty, I must say, this news is music to my ears! The University of Kentucky men’s basketball team’s Ball of Duty training program is not just innovative, but it also resonates deeply with the gaming community.
It is clear that the influence of the Call of Duty series on popular culture continues to grow, as evidenced by Black Ops 6 being the top-selling game in the US for October 2024 and the third best-selling game of the year thus far. The franchise has now even inspired the University of Kentucky men’s basketball team, which is currently ranked nationally, to reach new heights.
Presently, the Kentucky Wildcats hold the 8th position nationwide and boast an unbeaten record at 5-0. Senior guard Koby Brea ascribes this success to their unique training regimen modeled after Call of Duty, named “Ball of Duty.” During a gathering with Kentucky Sports Radio, Brea elucidated the guidelines of Ball of Duty and how it became part of their team dynamics.
Brea commented, “We’re noticing more videos showing our defensive unity. It’s impressive to see how many times we manage three consecutive stops. This is something we’re particularly proud of and it has a humorous twist: the coaches have given it a nickname, ‘Ball of Duty.’ You see, quite a few team members enjoy playing Call of Duty. It’s like an additional contest within the main game… So far in every match, we’ve been victorious in that mini-competition.
A smart tactic for almost any sports team is focusing on preventing the opposing side from scoring, as this greatly increases your chances of winning games. The University of Kentucky coaches have creatively referred to multiple defensive stops as “kills,” which seems to resonate with their Call of Duty-enthusiast players. If this approach motivates the team to improve their defense, then the coaching staff has successfully done their job.
After leaving the court, players will get the chance to explore the fresh Black Ops 6 Zombies map from late November onwards, or they could even take on the role of a gun-wielding raccoon in the newest DLC. In the coming times, it’s said that Microsoft has set up a new team to guide the future of the franchise, and whispers about the 2027 Call of Duty game are starting to circulate.
