The side quest “Imprisoned by the Riddles of Reality” in The Outer Worlds 2 takes place at the Alexandra Monastery in Golden Ridge. While the quest isn’t overly challenging, locating the necessary items can be tricky. This guide will show you exactly where to find the two books the Order members are looking for.

How to start the Imprisoned by the Riddles of Reality quest?

You’ll find the scholars gathered in a small room off to the side of one of the courtyards at the Alexandra Monastery. To continue the story, you need to talk to Brun and Chao, so you can’t miss finding this place.

Once you’ve talked about the nature of war and obtained a crucial story item, the scholars will need your help. They’ll ask you to locate two specific books.

  1. Only Real Numbers: The Casualties of Appeasement;
  2. Archivist Maler’s Dissertation on Deescalation Theory.

Where to find Only Real Numbers: The Casualties of Appeasement?

Return to the western wing of the Monastery, where you previously solved the rolling ball puzzle. Clear out any enemies in the area to avoid being disturbed. Walk through the library, and then head upstairs to where the ball track starts.

At the end of the red hallway, there’s a ventilation shaft. Crawl inside, and you’ll end up in a locked room.

You’ll find the first book for the researchers on the table. After that, you can restore power to the blocked doors and return to the library. This completes the first step of the quest.

Where to find Archivist Maler’s Dissertation on Deescalation Theory?

Go back to the room with the branching paths and turn left.

The path ahead will take you to a room with walls covered in white marble. Clear out all the enemies inside. Then, jump up onto the shelf covered with yellow fabric to reach the next level. You might need to use a double jump to get there.

The book you need is on the shelf to your left. After you get it, please go back to the researchers’ room.

The quickest route is through the doors at the end of the hallway that were previously blocked. You can now open them from your side.

Which dialogue option to choose?

Speak with the members of the Order and give them the books, placing them in the container by the window. Brun and Chao will examine the books and then ask for your thoughts. Your choice of response will determine which of two rewards you receive for finishing the mission.

  1. If you agree with Chao and condemn violence, you will receive a special armor – Repellent Awakened Seer Robes Armor. This medium armor increases your chance to dodge, boosts damage resistance, and significantly enhances sprint speed during combat. Its modifications also allow you to avoid damage and convert some of it into energy.

  1. If you justify war in self-defense and support Anchoress Brun, you will receive the Sawed-Off Heavy Machine Gun. This weapon allows you to shoot it while sliding, jumping, and sprinting.
