This Super Mario Bros. Movie Character May Not Be In The Sequel

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit that the news about the potential absence of Foreman Spike in the upcoming Super Mario Bros. sequel has left me quite disheartened. The original movie was such a delight, and Foreman Spike added a unique flavor to it – his wit, humor, and camaraderie with Mario were unparalleled!

In the upcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, there’s a chance that Foreman Spike might not make an appearance. Recently, Sebastian Maniscalco, who voiced the character in the original film, has shared his doubts about returning for the second installment.

According to Maniscalco, he took his kids to a Universal Studios theme park intending to display a plush toy modeled after Foreman Spike, a character he’s fond of. Unfortunately, the store didn’t have any merchandise featuring this character, which makes Maniscalco speculate that Foreman Spike might not be making a comeback.

If Spike doesn’t return, there won’t be a sequel. It was all about other characters and then me, without any pets or belongings. The lack of a stuffed animal in my character doesn’t instill much faith that I’ll reappear. I haven’t received any news yet, so we’re both in the dark about it,” he joked with ScreenRant.

There’s a chance that character Foreman Spike might be featured in the upcoming Mario film, although Maniscalco may not have received any updates about it so far. Regarding recurring characters, no one has been officially announced yet, but it’s almost guaranteed that Chris Pratt will reprise his role as Mario.

2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie raked in over $1.36 billion globally, placing it as the second highest-grossing film of the year, just behind Barbie ($1.446 billion). In March 2024, Nintendo and Illumination revealed plans to collaborate on another Mario movie, set within the realm of Super Mario Bros.

It’s unclear if it’ll be The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 or another project altogether. Earlier reports hinted at a Donkey Kong movie with Seth Rogen. Regardless of what it turns out to be, the upcoming film is slated for release in U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026.

Chris Meledandri from Illumination will team up with Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, to produce the upcoming film. The directors, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, who helmed the 2023 movie, are set to return for the next installment as well. Universal Pictures will once again partner with Nintendo for financing, and they’ll handle the distribution of the film once more.

Alongside the upcoming animated Mario film, Nintendo and Sony are collaborating on a live-action adaptation of The Legend of Zelda.
