„This show is unhinged.” Dandadan doesn't hold back, making fun of anime's bizarre censorship

As someone who has been following anime for over two decades now, I must say that the latest sensation of the current season, Dandadan, is nothing short of a breath of fresh air. Streaming on Netflix, this sci-fi anime is a rollercoaster ride of action, ghosts, aliens, and captivating narratives that keep me hooked episode after episode.

Without a doubt, Dandadan is the standout anime of the current season, available for streaming on Netflix. This exhilarating sci-fi series is packed with action, spirits, extraterrestrials, and thought-provoking narratives that captivate anime enthusiasts. The creative minds behind this show don’t shy away from tackling a diverse array of themes, even those that are emotionally charged or contentious. They boldly weave these ideas into the storyline with skill and finesse.

In Episode 10, they poked fun at an unconventional form of editing, specifically referencing a humorous skit about it. It’s important to note that in China, programs are required to pass rigorous checks to ensure they adhere to broadcasting guidelines, and anything deemed inappropriate is revised. This was evident in Arcane, but this isn’t the only instance nor the sole content matter subjected to censorship.

In Chinese anime productions, instances of blood are often edited or dimmed rather than shown explicitly – a running joke among fans has been that the depicted blood color is altered to white. Interestingly, the series Dandadan seems to acknowledge this humorous convention.

In the latest installment of the show, Mr. Mantis Shrimp appeared to be coated in what seemed like his own blood. But, surprisingly, it was discovered to be cow’s milk instead! This discovery solved a mystery for him. To top it off, he was given a cow and bid farewell. It’s hard to ignore the playful nod towards the popular theory of alien abductions of cows. Additionally, this jest serves as a subtle criticism of censorship in China, a topic that has been widely discussed online over time.

Fans of Dandadan immediately noted with amusement the intentions of the anime creators:

In that episode, I noticed that the milk carton seemed to be making light of censorship – as ObjectLess3847 put it.

This show is freaking unhinged – LegitimateHost5068.

I haven’t seen anyone point out how the whole milk blood subplot was a hilariously contrived setup to jam a cow abduction into Dandadan. Given what Dandadan is, though, it never would’ve been a complete work unless Tatsu did this – Steve_Blockman.

Yukinobu Tatsu showcases the ridiculousness of the world in a humorous yet poignant manner, effortlessly blending comedy with drama in his works. Notably, Dandadan transcends mere action and humor; it is also an assemblage of intriguing and emotionally resonant stories.
