This Shocking Anakin Skywalker Prequel Trilogy Detail Foreshadows Ahsoka Nearly A Decade Before Her Debut

Even though Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace came out in 1999, almost ten years before Star Wars: The Clone Wars began, a small detail about Anakin Skywalker in the film actually hints at the future appearance of his Jedi apprentice, Ahsoka Tano.

The Star Wars universe is famous for changing established details, and The Clone Wars series was no different. The show, along with the earlier Clone Wars movie, takes place between Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, filling in the gap after the prequel movies ended.

One of the interesting additions The Clone Wars made to the Star Wars prequels was the introduction of Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. This wasn’t hinted at in the original three prequel films. However, a very subtle detail in The Phantom Menace actually foreshadows Ahsoka‘s appearance later on, even though she wasn’t originally part of the plan.

Anakin Skywalker’s Phantom Menace Podracer Shares A Design With Ahsoka

A key scene in The Phantom Menace is Anakin’s podrace, which determines whether he’ll be freed – though he doesn’t realize it at the time. Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn has made an agreement with Watto, the owner of Anakin and his mother, Shmi Skywalker, both slaves. The deal is that if Anakin wins the race, Watto must let him go free.

It’s easy to overlook in the midst of everything, but Anakin Skywalker’s podracer and Ahsoka Tano share a striking visual connection. While Ahsoka isn’t a Twi’lek – the Star Wars species famous for their head-tails called lekku – she’s a Togruta with unique blue-and-white striped lekku that closely resemble the stripes on Anakin’s podracer.

It’s curious that Anakin’s podracer features an orange design strikingly similar to the letter “A,” echoing both Ahsoka’s appearance and name. Surprisingly, many Star Wars fans haven’t noticed this connection, though it’s quite noticeable. It’s likely this resemblance wasn’t a deliberate choice by the creators.

George Lucas originally envisioned Anakin Skywalker having a Padawan learner. While the idea started with Lucas, the character of Ahsoka Tano was largely designed by Dave Filoni, who joined Lucasfilm several years after The Phantom Menace came out. It’s possible there was an early connection between the two, but it’s more likely just a fortunate coincidence that led to one of the greatest decisions in Star Wars history.

Ahsoka Wasn’t The Plan Yet, But She Became Crucial

Even though Ahsoka wasn’t in the prequel movies and Anakin never had a Padawan mentioned in those films, she’s now a hugely important figure in the Star Wars universe. She especially helps explain why Anakin Skywalker turned to the dark side, making his story more understandable.

When Ahsoka left the Jedi Order, it deeply shook Anakin’s faith in the Jedi Council. This loss of trust created an opening for Palpatine to manipulate Anakin, ultimately leading him to betray the Jedi in Revenge of the Sith.

One common criticism of the movie was that Anakin’s change to the dark side felt too sudden. However, introducing Ahsoka and exploring the emotional complexity of their relationship gave his descent a clearer context, ultimately making it a more compelling and understandable story.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I think Ahsoka’s impact goes way beyond just her connection to Anakin Skywalker. She’s become absolutely vital for where the franchise is headed. Right now, Ahsoka season 2 is the only live-action Star Wars show we know for sure is coming, and with Dave Filoni now leading the charge, it’s pretty obvious she’s going to remain a central figure in the Star Wars universe for a long time.

When designers were creating Anakin Skywalker’s podracer in The Phantom Menace, no one likely considered how that design would connect to Ahsoka Tano years later. However, the striking visual similarities between the podracer and Ahsoka’s design now seem like a subtle hint – a foreshadowing of both her important role in the Star Wars universe and Anakin’s ultimate destiny.
