In February 2023, Wizards of the Coast shut down one of its game development teams, leading to the cancellation of several games they were working on, including a multiplayer game called Whimpact!—described as a blend of Pokémon and Fall Guys. Instead of abandoning the project, Leah Hoyer, then a creative VP at WotC, started her own studio, Level Headed Games, and secured the rights to continue developing Whimpact!, with a planned early access release coming soon.
Whimpact! is a game where you collect and care for adorable creatures called Whims, who share magical abilities with you. The better you treat your Whims, the more powerful they become! You can team up with up to seven other players in arena-style battles. Together, you’ll collect a special energy source called Starcane, overcome challenges, and fight off waves of robots trying to steal it.
Players can collect seven different types of Whims, and each type comes in six different colors. The color of a Whim determines the power it gives you – these powers include things like running faster, getting stronger, and jumping higher or farther. You can even switch between different Whims during a match to combine powers and adapt your abilities.
Players can personalize both their characters and the Whims with cosmetic items like outfits, weapon skins, and decorations for their personal home base, called a Home Tile. The initial trailer showcases some of these items, such as various clothes, hats, and even a watermelon sword!
As of today, there’s no confirmed release date for Whimpact! However, when it’s ready, the game will first be available on PC as an early access title.
