The movie The Super Mario Galaxy Movie might reveal how Bowser Jr. can be beaten, and the answer could lie in the 2002 GameCube game Super Mario Sunshine. This game is a fan favorite in the Super Mario series, and it’s especially important because it’s where Bowser Jr. first appeared.
In addition to everything else, the game will also include elements from Super Mario Sunshine. Marketing materials have revealed that Mario will be using the Magic Paintbrush – the very same one he used in Super Mario Sunshine – as a weapon.
In Super Mario Sunshine, a villain disguised as Shadow Mario used a magical paintbrush to cover the tropical Delfino Square in a dark, messy substance called “goop.” This forced Mario to embark on a quest to clean up the island and clear his name.
Why Super Mario Sunshine May Play An Important Role In Mario’s Battle With Bowser Jr.
As a big fan, I’m really excited because the movie doesn’t seem to be retelling the story of the first Super Mario Galaxy game. Instead, it’s taking us on a brand new, cosmic adventure with Mario and all his friends, and that feels really true to the spirit of the original game!
There are hints that the new game, while not following the story of Super Mario Sunshine, might use a similar main gameplay idea to help Mario defeat Bowser Jr. In Super Mario Sunshine, Mario used a water-shooting robot named F.L.U.D.D. to clean up messes, defeat enemies, and eventually Bowser Jr.
The latest trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie shows Bowser Jr. attacking Rosalina using a Piranha Plant made of the same material he uses to change into his special “Wonder” form. This suggests the movie’s version of the Piranha Plants might be similar to the “Piranhabons” from Super Mario Sunshine, which were created from a gooey substance.
If this is true, Wonder Bowser Jr. might simply be taking the place of Shadow Mario, as he’s created from the same goo used in Super Mario Sunshine. Given that this goo from the Magic Paintbrush is likely how Bowser Jr. causes trouble, it makes sense that F.L.U.D.D. would be the most effective way to stop him.
As seen in Super Mario Sunshine, F.L.U.D.D. can clean up the goop, meaning Mario could use it to destroy goop-based enemies and potentially change Wonder Bowser Jr. back to normal. Because F.L.U.D.D. seems so powerful, Mario might try to get it in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
I’ve been thinking about how Mario gets F.L.U.D.D., and it’s interesting because both it and the Magic Paintbrush seem to come from the same place. That makes me wonder if the movie will follow the same pattern as the games. In the games, Professor E. Gadd created both of them. Maybe in the movie, he’ll be the one to give Mario F.L.U.D.D. after Bowser Jr. takes the paintbrush!
No matter how the movie ends, including F.L.U.D.D. in the final fight would be a fantastic nod to a beloved Mario game that probably won’t get its own movie. The film already seems to be drawing inspiration from several different games, so it would fit right in.
The casino scene is heavily inspired by Super Mario Bros. 2, and the idea of Yoshi protecting Baby Mario and Luigi comes directly from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. Overall, The Super Mario Bros. Movie appears to be combining elements from several different Super Mario games, and Super Mario Sunshine seems to be one of them.
