Many TV series are good at developing and continuing their storylines, but often struggle to know when to finish. While even Yellowstone is adding more content after its main story ended, Mayor of Kingstown, starring Jeremy Renner, seems to have a planned conclusion, and is currently in its fourth season.
Although Mayor of Kingstown doesn’t generate quite as much buzz as Yellowstone, many consider it to be among Taylor Sheridan’s strongest work and a consistent hit for Paramount+. Even though Sheridan stepped back from writing after the first season, he remains a producer, and co-creator Hugh Dillon recently told ScreenRant that the show is still heading towards the ending Sheridan originally envisioned.
I worked closely with Taylor for years; he was my acting coach and a true mentor. He guided me through 75 episodes of television, and during that time, we often discussed our ideas for creating our own shows. Taylor had an incredible ability to quickly understand stories and characters. He could read a script and immediately grasp its potential. He helped me envision the complete arc of a project, seeing how things would ultimately unfold. We had a strong start with the first episode, which he wrote in just two days, and that momentum carried us through the entire first season. What set Taylor apart was his ability to always keep the ending in mind, and he taught me to do the same – to plan the key moments I wanted to hit and then work backwards to achieve them, always knowing where the story was headed.
As a critic, I’ve been following this project from the very beginning, and it’s fascinating to hear about the early stages. Apparently, the core storyline was established quite a while ago – Taylor, one of the key creatives, had a very clear vision for the ending. We’d discuss the overall arc, knowing where things were ultimately headed. That actually made the creative process more enjoyable, because it allowed us to build out the details and surprises, confident that everything would ultimately converge on that pre-determined conclusion. It’s a smart approach – knowing the destination lets you really enjoy the journey of getting there.
