Earlier this year, Valve updated its policies to block adult games from being released in early access on Steam. This followed a larger trend of restrictions on adult content across Steam and Itch.io, driven by pressure from banks and payment companies. The indie horror game Horses is rated M for Mature, meaning it’s not considered adult content. Despite this, Steam told the game’s developer, Santa Ragione, that Horses would be banned from the platform in 2023. The developer says Valve hasn’t provided any explanation for the ban, even two years after the decision.
Horses is a game played from a first-person perspective where you take on the role of a ranch worker spending two weeks on a strange and disturbing farm. The game features creatures that appear to be horses, but are actually nude humans wearing horse masks and being treated like work animals.
Okay, so there’s been a lot of talk about my new game, Horses, and let me clear things up. It’s definitely not pornographic, despite what some people might think! The publisher even made a joke about disappointing anyone expecting… well, you get the idea. Honestly, we’re trying to do something different with this game – we want to push boundaries and get players thinking. It’s less about being titillating and more about creating a sense of tension and making you question why you’re feeling what you’re feeling. We want you to look at the characters, the game’s systems, and ultimately, your own limits. It’s about exploring those feelings, not just… you know, the obvious.
Valve, the game’s publisher, didn’t explain why the game was banned or what changes could have prevented it. Santa Ragione, the developer, suspects the ban stemmed from an initial scene showing a young girl on the shoulders of a nude adult wearing a horse mask. The publisher clarified that the scene was later updated to feature a woman in her twenties, as the dialogue and story worked better with an older character.
Things are getting pretty tough for us at Santa Ragione. We poured about $100,000 into making ‘Horses,’ and without a Steam release, we’re honestly worried about having to close up shop. So, to try and get some of that money back, we’re releasing ‘Horses’ on PC through the Epic Games Store, Humble Store, GOG, and Itch.io on December 4th. We’ll be selling it for $5, and really hope you guys check it out – it would mean a lot!
