Currently unfolding in Melbourne is the initial significant professional tennis tournament of the year, the Australian Open. For the 2025 event, there’s a novel broadcast option that gives off a Wii Sports vibe. This year, organizers of the Australian Open introduced something they call “AO Animated,” which presents animated, video game-style representations of real players during tennis matches.

In the video game featuring Jacob Fearnley versus Nick Kyrgios, you might notice that the animation isn’t flawless – occasionally, the player’s racket and tennis ball seem to disappear mysteriously. The sound quality could also use some improvement in syncing up perfectly. However, considering all factors, it’s still a respectable effort. You can find more of these matchups on the Australian Open’s YouTube channel, under the “Live” tab.

Nowadays, such unique broadcasts are gaining more attention. Previously, the NFL collaborated with Disney+ to air an unusual Simpsons-themed game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys on December 9. This unconventional broadcast featured characters like Homer, Bart, Moe, Carl, Barney, and Lenny playing on the field instead of the actual players.

Prior to this, the NHL collaborated with Disney on a live-action sports broadcast of a professional ice hockey match, complete with characters from the series Big City Greens strapping on their skates. Notably, the NFL also hosted a game where SpongeBob SquarePants was involved in the slime-themed event.
