Just in time for Halloween, Paramount+ is now streaming the popular film by Guillermo del Toro. It’s a great classic comic book movie to enjoy!
According to ComicBook.com, the 2004 film *Hellboy* is now available on Paramount+, but other movies in the *Hellboy* series aren’t currently on the platform. The movie stars Ron Perlman and features Selma Blair, Jeffrey Tambor, Karel Roden, Rupert Evans, and John Hurt. Guillermo del Toro directed and wrote the film, which is based on the first *Hellboy* comic, *Hellboy: Seed of Destruction*, created by Mike Mignola and published by Dark Horse Comics.
The story of *Hellboy* starts near the end of World War II, when Nazis tried to open a gateway to another world to win the war. Instead, they accidentally summoned a demon baby, who was then saved by Allied forces and named Hellboy. Years later, as an adult, Hellboy works for the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense. He teams up with a psychic merman (Doug Jones) and a woman who can control fire to protect America from supernatural threats, including a revived sorcerer who wants to bring about the end of the world.
Man, I’m still a huge fan of the original *Hellboy* movie. It’s seriously become a classic over time, and it still holds up. If you check Rotten Tomatoes, it’s ‘Certified Fresh’ with an 81% approval rating, and regular folks like me agree – it’s got a 66% audience score with over 250,000 ratings! What’s cool is that it came out before superhero movies were *everywhere*, and everyone back then loved how funny and visually amazing Guillermo del Toro made it.
The *Hellboy* movie was also a financial hit, bringing in $99.8 million despite costing about $60 million to make. Because it did so well in theaters, a sequel was released in 2008, bringing back director Guillermo del Toro and actor Ron Perlman. This new film featured Hellboy fighting a legendary prince who aimed to take over the world.
Hellboy Received 2 Disappointing Reboots Without Del Toro
Okay, so back in 2019, Lionsgate tried to reboot *Hellboy* with a new movie directed by Neil Marshall, who did *The Descent*. David Harbour took over as Hellboy, and Milla Jovovich and Ian McShane were in it too. Honestly, it just didn’t hit the same way Guillermo del Toro and Ron Perlman did, and everyone pretty much hated it. It also didn’t do well financially – it cost around $50 million to make but only brought in about $55 million at the box office. A real bummer, because I was hoping for a good Hellboy movie!
In 2024, the *Hellboy* franchise tried again with a new reboot called *Hellboy: The Crooked Man*. Jack Kesy, known for his roles in *The Strain* and *Deadpool 2*, played Hellboy, alongside Jefferson White (*Yellowstone*) and Adeline Rudolph (*Resident Evil*). Unfortunately, the film was not well-received by critics and currently has a 36% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
2004’s Hellboy is now streaming on Paramount+.
