This Game Lets You Design Your Own Manga Battles

In a nutshell, while there are many games that resemble Roguelike deckbuilders, The Fable: Manga Build Roguelike, set to launch in November, stands out as it allows players to create their own manga-style battle sequences, making it rather unique within the genre.

As a die-hard fan of the Fable series by Katsuhisa Minami, diving into the Manga Build Roguelike feels like stepping right back into his intriguing world. Taking on the role of “The Fable,” I thought I could finally take a breather and blend in with society for a year. But as fate would have it, things never go smoothly for this hitman, and before I knew it, chaos was once again following me around every corner!

Due to the success of Sega’s Like A Dragon series, previously recognized as Yakuza in the Western world (a series that revolves around a former Japanese mobster drawn back into criminal activities), it appears that The Fable could be an excellent candidate for a video game transformation.

Rather than a direct translation, this game doesn’t follow that approach. It incorporates genuine comic panels from the manga, using The Fable’s dynamic action sequences as a deck of cards instead. In combat, players arrange an assortment of these comic panels, each having properties such as attack, defense, and movement, in a specific order. Then, the game simulates the battle based on the sequence of played panels.

1. Akira, the main character, is a versatile hitman who excels in inflicting damage both at close range and from afar using firearms.
2. Yoko, his sister, has the ability to catch enemies off guard with surprise ambushes.
3. Suzuki, another hitman, specializes in setting up traps and applying debuffs.

As players progress through the game, they can enhance their manga deck to amplify the potency of specific panels.

For those seeking a test of their skills, they could engage with the game’s Puzzle Mode that offers one-page combat scenarios, or enjoy scenes from the initial manga recreated as mini-games instead.

Developer Mono stated in a press release that not just followers of the series, but also those new to it, will experience the same level of suspense and cleverness in battles that the manga offers.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited to share that back in 2024, the publisher Kodansha started rolling out English versions of The Fable – a manga-style roguelike game that has been creating quite a buzz! And guess what? On November 5, you can finally get your hands on it, as it’s set to launch on PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch. Can’t wait for the adventure to begin!
