Some things are inevitable, like rain and wind, and another is that when a popular character’s copyright expires, a horror movie based on it quickly follows. We recently saw this with Winnie the Pooh, and this year it happened with Steamboat Willie, the early version of Mickey Mouse. Steamboat Willie entered the public domain on January 1, 2024, and was quickly turned into a villain in the short horror-comedy film, *Screamboat*. A Blu-ray version, including a special steelbook 4K Blu-ray available for pre-order at Amazon for $43, will be released on December 9th.

This Blu-ray doesn’t have a lot of bonus features, but it does include some deleted scenes, a brief look at how the movie was made, and a commentary track featuring David Howard Thornton, who played Willie.

Just one day after the classic cartoon *Steamboat Willie* became freely available for anyone to use, a new, very different take on the character appeared: *Screamboat*. This film features a terrifying version of Mickey Mouse, now a violent ferry captain in New York, who preys on his passengers. While *Screamboat* isn’t a particularly memorable film and seems designed to capitalize on the public domain release, it’s connected to the horror franchise *Terrifier*. The same team that made *Terrifier 2* and *3* created this movie, and David Howard Thornton, known for playing Art the Clown, is the actor inside the Mickey Mouse costume.
Since its release in April, the movie has gotten a somewhat mixed reaction. However, if you’re looking for a wildly violent film with a small mouse causing mayhem, and you appreciate traditional practical effects, then ‘Screamboat’ might be for you. It’s packed with action and doesn’t require much deep thought – it’s pure entertainment.
