Lately, Charlie Sheen has been getting a lot of attention thanks to his new documentary, aka Charlie Sheen, which came out last month on Netflix. Seeing his name everywhere reminded me of a really over-the-top action movie I loved as a kid, Navy SEALs. It currently has a very low 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which isn’t shocking, but still seems harsh! I had to rewatch it to see if my memories matched up, or if Rotten Tomatoes was right about how bad it is.

The Movie Is As Insane As I Remember It
I have no idea how I got into see this movie in theaters when it first came out – I was way too young! But the ’90s were different, so somehow I did. I also remember renting it a couple of times, once by myself and another time just to share it with my friends. We all loved it. The movie was full of ’80s stars and had that classic, over-the-top ’80s action that was so much fun.
The movie featured familiar faces from other films, including Bill Paxton and Rick Rossovich (who you might recognize as Slider from Top Gun) and Michael Biehn, both of whom were in The Terminator and Aliens. Revisiting it recently, I also spotted Dennis Haysbert, who I’d forgotten but probably knew from another Charlie Sheen hit, Major League, which came out the year before.

Does It Hold Up To The Lofty Standards I Set As A Teenager?
I recently rewatched Navy SEALs on Amazon Prime, and while it’s probably not a critical masterpiece – it’s better than the 15% rating it has on Rotten Tomatoes. User reviews are more generous, giving it around 43%, which feels accurate. It’s definitely not a classic like Ben-Hur, and it won’t be anyone’s favorite war movie, but it’s a genuinely fun, action-packed film that really captures the spirit of 1980s action movies.
The characters aren’t very developed, and the story isn’t particularly clever, but that’s not what I’m looking for in a movie like this. It’s perfect for a relaxing Saturday afternoon when I just want to switch off my brain. It doesn’t require any deep thought – just lots of action and some hilariously bad, but memorable, lines.

While Navy SEALs isn’t likely to be considered one of the decade’s best films, it’s still an enjoyable watch. If you’re a fan of action movies like Predator or Under Siege, you’ll probably like this one.
