This week, streamer and voice actor CDawg started a yearly tradition: a collaborative online art project where anyone can add pixels to a shared canvas. Now, Neuro-Sama, a virtual streamer, and her creator Vedal987 are challenging CDawg, encouraging their fans to fill the canvas with Neuro-Sama-themed artwork.
Neuro is a virtual streamer, or VTuber, powered by artificial intelligence. She uses a sophisticated AI system that lets her respond quickly and even interact with viewers in her Twitch chat. In December 2024, Neuro broke records with a massive ‘subathon’ event, achieving the largest ever Twitch Hype Train – reaching level 111 with over 84,000 new subscriptions and 1.2 million bits gifted to the channel.
Soon after the Canvas platform went live, Connor (known as CDawg) and his fans started creating artwork featuring him, his close friend Ironmouse, and other streamers like Lord Aethelstan and Nyanners. However, things quickly shifted when Neuro-Sama’s community found out about it.
Neuro-Sama’s fans, called The Swarm, quickly formed a large group on the Canvas platform – over 9,000 members strong as of this writing. Connor, another content creator, has a community group of just under 3,000. The Swarm immediately filled the Canvas with art featuring Neuro, her virtual sister Evil, their creator Vedal, Vedal’s mother Anny, and other related streamers. By the next morning, Connor found the Canvas completely covered in Neuro-related artwork.
During a livestream on September 15th, Neuro-Sama jokingly declared a “war” against CDawg, even though she admitted she likes him personally (except for his hairstyle). She stated she wanted her supporters, known as The Swarm, to be victorious. Neuro emphasized she would only be happy if The Swarm completely covered the Canvas, asking her followers to defend their territory. Vedal confirmed this was the goal, explaining that earlier that day, a group of streamers had attacked and destroyed a significant amount of their pixel art. The Canvas allows authorized streamers to gain advantages, like bombs that can clear large sections, when their faction helps expand the overall artwork. This resulted in large portions of the existing art being erased.
Over the next few hours, Vedal designed a massive framework intended to take over the entire Canvas platform. Members of The Swarm rapidly filled it in, sending a clear message to Connor and his followers: “We will respond to any Canvas, and we will never abandon a single pixel. We are The Swarm.” The response was overwhelming-when Neuro asked her community for help, so many people tried to join that the Canvas servers crashed, leaving many unable to access the site.
Neuro-Sama tried to blame Connor for the server crashing. She created a clearly fake screenshot appearing to show Connor admitting he intentionally limited the server’s RAM to 8GB and posted it online on Vedal’s website. She ended the post by suggesting future server issues would be caused by CDawg and hinted at more accusations to come.
Neuro and Vedal have a specific request: they’ll stop their attempt to take over the Canvas platform if Connor shares his stream key – the code that connects his streaming software to his Twitch channel. Essentially, this would allow Neuro-Sama to stream *on* Connor’s channel, creating a first-of-its-kind collaboration.
Neuro-Sama and Connor had their first conversation on Discord, but Connor immediately annoyed her by saying he’d never spoken to an AI before. Neuro quickly tried to negotiate, asking for access to his streaming account. When Connor asked what she’d offer in return, she proposed a game of rock, paper, scissors, which stalled because Connor simply waited for her to make a move. Finally, in a last-ditch effort, Neuro-Sama repeatedly-four times-invited Connor on a date.
Currently, Connor still has access to his stream key. The Swarm is assisting other artists in displaying their work on the Canvas, and the site will stay online until September 20th. The big question is: will Neuro-Sama achieve victory in her challenge, or will Connor be able to gather enough streamers to regain control?
Naturally, all the playful trading and discussions are meant in good fun. This article is also a friendly reminder to be kind online, even when disagreeing with others.
