A film contest created by YouTubers known as ‘The Dor Brothers’ impressed judges including Grimes and Oliver Tree.
The Dor Brothers are popular YouTubers known for their creative videos using artificial intelligence. Last October, they hosted a film festival and offered a $35,000 prize to the winner.
The Dor Awards festival received hundreds of submissions and was judged by a panel of prominent creators, featuring musician Grimes, WWE star Logan Paul, Oliver Tree, Academy Award winner Roger Avary, and Brian Redban from Kill Tony, among others.
The film contest had a few basic guidelines: submissions needed to be between one and three minutes long and focus on one of three themes – doors, twins, or trophies.
After a competition that brought us down to the top 10, a winner was chosen and awarded $20,000! Second place received $10,000, and third place took home $5,000. You can watch all of the films, including the winning one, for free at this link.
‘PerfectMan’ wins $20,000 in AI film festival contest
‘PerfectMan,’ created by Ofri Margalit and Omer Eventov, won the competition and greatly impressed the judges.
The story’s plot, which we won’t reveal, cleverly used the idea of doors and explored a type of technological horror that judges thought was disturbingly plausible.
Logan Paul described the experience as unsettling, saying it felt like a possible near-future scenario that could happen rapidly. He was moved by it, experiencing both sadness and a strange beauty alongside the creepiness.
Roger Avary, who helped write Pulp Fiction, also liked PerfectMan, noting its powerful and moving story.
“This was a film that had something to say,” he remarked.
Grimes, trying a reaction video for the first time, described the video she watched as “beautiful.”
The second-place winner was Danny Tseng’s horror film, ‘Torii.’ It’s filmed in a ‘found footage’ style and follows tourists in Japan who act badly – a behavior that often mirrors what you see from online streamers today.
Mathieu Samson’s novel, ‘Back Door,’ features a darkly humorous and disturbing premise: a shrinking military force attempting to infiltrate Kim Jong Un’s body through a bizarre, unconventional route, reminiscent of a graphic and unsettling take on ‘The Magic School Bus.’
With so much low-quality AI-generated content out there, these projects truly stood out and demonstrated what AI can achieve in filmmaking. As the technology improves, the next Dor Awards are expected to be even more successful.
