‘They’ve Been Stolen’: Timothée Chalamet Had Strong Feelings About Cutting His Locks For Dune: Part Three

An actor’s hairstyle can significantly influence their performance, and sometimes they go to great lengths to get it right. For example, Tom Felton had to dye his hair every nine days to play Draco Malfoy in the Harry Potter films, and Matt Smith sported a bold mohawk for Caught Stealing. However, these transformations aren’t always enjoyable for the actors, as Timothée Chalamet showed when he reacted to having to cut his hair for Dune: Part Three.

Timothée Chalamet is known for his naturally curly, voluminous brown hair, and he clearly loves it. He recently appeared on The Graham Norton Show to talk about his upcoming movie, Marty Supreme, and admitted he wasn’t happy about having to cut his hair very short for the next Dune movie. When Norton jokingly asked what happened to his “beautiful hair,” Chalamet responded:

They’re all gone. They’ve been stolen.

That’s a great way to put it! Graham Norton followed up by asking how long it had been since he’d lost his famous curls.

Since June 25.

I can easily picture Timothée Chalamet marking off another day on a calendar since Denis Villeneuve decided to have his hair shaved for Dune. If he remembers exactly when it happened, he’s clearly still affected by it—which was already pretty clear when he said his hair had been “stolen.” Thankfully for Villeneuve, hair does grow back!

Let me tell you, watching Timothée Chalamet navigate this role was fascinating. He clearly got why director Denis Villeneuve wanted to give him such a drastic haircut for the part – it served the story, absolutely. But even understanding that, the actor actually pleaded with Villeneuve to maybe, just maybe, rethink it! He actually said…

I was getting ready to film Dune: Part Three. My character goes through a significant change, and I’m playing him much older – about 15 to 20 years older. We started by cutting off just three millimeters of hair, but the director kept asking for more – first 1.5 millimeters, then another millimeter. I finally had to plead with him to stop! It’s strange, but we all feel so connected to our hair – it really feels like part of who we are.

I can relate to what the Oscar nominee said. Our hair really impacts how we feel about ourselves. Timothée Chalamet often changes his hairstyle for his roles – like the mullet for Don’t Look Up or the Bob Dylan look in A Complete Unknown (and despite what Dwayne Johnson joked, it wasn’t actually made from his chest hair!). Because of this, it’s understandable he’d feel a strong connection to his natural hair.

Emma Stone can likely relate to Timothée Chalamet’s experience. She once shaved her head for a role, and even though she knew it was coming for over a year, she admitted to feeling panicked when the time actually arrived.

Timothée Chalamet’s hair will grow back, just like Emma Stone’s did—though he might not pull off a short pixie cut as well! It’s possible a bold haircut is just part of becoming a major star. Now that the second Dune film has received Academy Award recognition, including a Best Picture nomination, we’ll see how audiences react when Dune: Part Three comes out in 2026.
