As a lifelong Christmas movie enthusiast who has spent countless snowy evenings huddled around the TV, I can say with confidence that the battle between Elf and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for the title of best Christmas film is one of the most exciting annual traditions I look forward to.
Without a doubt, you’re likely familiar with the beloved holiday classic, “Elf” starring Will Ferrell. This heartwarming film is consistently one of the most-viewed productions during the festive season, outpacing many others including last year when it held the top spot according to Samba TV’s report. For the past 3 years, “Elf” has been in a close race with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for the title of the best Christmas movie.
It turns out that “Elf” wasn’t the most-watched Christmas movie of 2024, as a new Samba TV study revealed through Forbes. Instead, the title went to “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” with “Elf” coming in second place based on viewing data between November 1 and December 10 among Christmas movies.
As a gamer, I’ve learned from a recent study by Samba TV that over 9.4 million households tuned into ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ this year, which is a 7% jump compared to last year’s viewership of 7.9 million. On the flip side, ‘Elf’ was watched in approximately 8.7 million homes.
Over the last three holiday seasons, I’ve found myself in an interesting dilemma as a gamer – choosing between competing Christmas movie releases. Just like Ashwin Navin, the co-founder and CEO of Samba TV, described it.
2024 saw classic Christmas comedies continuing their enduring popularity during the holiday season, as they occupied the top five spots among favorite holiday movies. For three years running, National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and Elf have been vying for the number one position, demonstrating the undying appeal of timeless humor in these classic Christmas films.
The third position was claimed by the heartwarming holiday classic, Home Alone. This movie is always a joy to revisit, despite having a slightly lower audience rating compared to the top two spots. Nevertheless, its charm managed to attract an impressive 4.1 million households.
2024’s favorite Christmas films continue to feature “Four Christmases” and “The Holiday,” holding the fourth and fifth positions in the rankings.
