So, yesterday’s Developer Direct was awesome – we finally got a really good look at the new Fable! And to top it off, they dropped an interview with the head of Playground Games, Ralph Fulton, which gave us even more details about what they’re planning. It was a great day to be a Fable fan, honestly.
Fable is a fairy tale, not fantasy
The developer has made it clear that the new Fable isn’t a continuation of previous games, and they aren’t trying to recreate Lionhead’s approach to game development. However, the team carefully considered what made the original Fable games special. They found a wealth of materials from the original developer, Lionhead, which helped them understand the series’ core identity. One document, in particular, was insightful: it stated that ‘Fable is a fairy tale, not fantasy’.
Fairytales and fantasy stories exist on opposite ends of a scale. Most people are familiar with fantasy – it’s usually epic, large in scope, and involves significant risks. Fairytales, however, are much more focused on individual experiences and personal connections. They center around everyday people and explore what happens when magic enters their lives, often with a clear lesson or moral at the heart of the story.
A key aspect of the game Fable, as pointed out by Fulton, is its strong British identity. This goes beyond simply using British language or accents; the game aims to capture the unique attitudes, thought processes, and behaviors commonly associated with British culture. Having Playground Games, a British studio, develop the game will undoubtedly be a significant advantage in achieving this.

With this being a fresh start for the series, many are curious if the new Fable will connect to the story of the original games. While Fulton didn’t directly answer that question, he did emphasize that the team values the story created by Lionhead Studios. It’s possible we’ll find some hidden references or nods to the past, though.
Since we’re essentially starting fresh with a reboot, it was crucial for us to create our own story within the world of Albion. That’s why this isn’t a direct sequel – it’s not tied to the events or characters of the original game. However, we still draw from the established history and core elements of the Fable universe, which are important to our narrative.
Fable is coming to PC, PS5, and XSX/S. The game’s release is planned for this fall.
