The developers of Hollow Knight: Silksong, likely the biggest indie game of 2025, are offering players a free downloadable content pack for the new game and an updated version of the original Hollow Knight.
While the bug-themed adventure game, Silksong, didn’t win any major awards at The Game Awards 2025, the Australian team behind it still had good news to share. In a blog post and on Steam, they announced what’s coming next for fans of the Hollow Knight series. They also expressed gratitude to the players – over 7 million have already bought the game, and many more have enjoyed it through Xbox Game Pass.
Free Silksong DLC
Let’s start with Silksong, which is planned to receive a sea-themed expansion called Sea of Sorrow in 2026. A brief teaser trailer has just been released. While the trailer doesn’t show much, fans are hoping it hints at a location that was previously missing from the game.
This new area – or rather, these new areas, as we’re adding several – will include new bosses, tools, and other exciting features. We’ll share more details right before the downloadable content is released. And the best part? It will be completely free, just like the DLC we offered for HK.
Hollow Knight for Switch 2 and with an update on other platforms
Additionally, the original Hollow Knight is getting an enhanced version for the Nintendo Switch 2. This update will bring improvements like higher resolution, better graphics, and options for smoother frame rates – all features that were first introduced in Silksong.

And that’s not all! Before the new version releases, Hollow Knight will also receive an update on other platforms. This update will fix bugs and add new features. Currently, a beta version is available on Steam, but it doesn’t include everything the developers are working on.
I’m so excited! Team Cherry just announced they’re releasing a set of collectible minifigures based on Hollow Knight: Silksong! They’ve teamed up with Alex Colvin from Tyto studio, who did a really cool set of figures for the first Hollow Knight game – those will be available again too, just in time for the holidays. I can’t wait to collect them all!

Great enthusiasm among fans
Fans were understandably excited by Team Cherry’s holiday message. Many expected Silksong to receive free or paid downloadable content, expanding an already large game. Players also celebrated changes to a well-known character in the Hollow Knight update – a fix many had been hoping for – and were pleased to see the sequel’s continued success.
However, fans will need to be patient and hope Team Cherry doesn’t add too much content, so they can release Sea of Sorrow hopefully sometime in 2026. It’s unlikely this downloadable content will become a completely new game – remember, Silksong was originally planned as the only paid expansion for Hollow Knight.
